Pearl Harbor (Just saw the movie)
« on: May 25, 2001, 05:45:00 PM »
WOW!!!  Absolutely blew my socks off how real the planes and dogfights were.  I kept thinking they were shooting down real relics!  I had to remind myself they were CG

It's a 3 hour movie and my only complaint is that it wasn't 3 hours of dogfighting!

The movie does have a love story that would normally have really bugged me but I have read dozens of accounts of "love stories" that were nearly identical to the one portrayed in the movie.

However... I would have MUCH MUCH MUCH preferred that the love story was more typical like both pilots having different girlfriends!  Then it would have still had the affect of the fear of loosing loved ones at war but it would have left the soap opra feel to daytime TV!

But by all means...Drop whatever you're doing and go see the next showing!  It is DEFINATELY worth the money to see this one on the big screen.

Somewhat of the same review here, but a little harsher.

Get there 90 minutes late, leave 30 minutes early, and you have a half-decent movie

I saw the movie Monday night, and I got to say that the love story killed the picture. The Pearl Harbor attack was great. If they decide to re make Midway I hope Spielberg Directs it. He's got the right atitude for war pictures.

Well saw it today and I must say it was a big let down.

3 hours long and it only had about 20-30  minutes of Pearl Harbor action.

I don't know why they called it Pearl Harbor because most of the show had nothing to do with it.

Was it a good movie? Yes
Was it mostly about Pearl Harbor? No!

It should have been called "Friends" or "Hey I saw her first" or "Guess what happened to us when we stopped by Pearl Harbor?"

Big let down to say the least.
I have been reborn a new man!

Notice I never said a better man.

I saw it and thought it was worth the price of admission for the pearl harbor attack but thats about it.  The rest is lowest common denominator blockbuster gibberish, with an attempt to include something for everyone and succeeding in only making it bland for all.

The dog fight scenes sucked.  Thanks, HTC, you have forever ruined wwII flying movies for me;p

True events leading up to the attack and Dolittle raid are paid lip service with some big omissions.  The importance of and reasons that our carriers were not in Pearl at the time of the attack is never mentioned.

The ending monologue irked me.  They painted the Dolittle raid as the turning point of the Pacific war, even going so far to state that afterwards Japan began to withdraw and never again threatened.  Um, roadkill.  But I guess it makes for a more decisive ending.

Oh, and I saw it with Fatty which probably made it seem worse than it was.

The special effects (i.e. any scene with hardware) were worth the $5 to me.

The love stuff had to be thrown in to get people like my wife there (she did like the movie).

Accurate or inaccurate; chick flick vs. war movie; whatever you want to call it, I just have this to say:

When they finally got to the good parts (any scene with an airplane in it); the first good scene where he's in his spit cutting through the bomber formation, well, I had tingly goosbumps all over and my heartrate/breathing/blood pressure went way up.  That was worth my price of admission.

TOTALLY agree Fatty, they should have ended the movie after the Pearl Harbor stuff, but nooooo..they had to  first insult one of the greatest Generals of all time, Gen. Doolittle, who was portrayed by one of the most liberal left wing wacko's alive. (For you left wingers, imagine Rush Limbaugh portraying your favorite General of WW2) Then, this historical inaccuracy's of the Doolittle raid was enough to get me to laugh!

Good entertainment for about 2 hours, too many love scenes, pointless plots (like a nurse would be allowed into a warroom while the Doolittle raid was being conducted, and the constant radio contact the Doolittle raid had in the movie while over Tokyo!)...

But Geeman LOVED the movie!

I'll wait until it's out on DVD or VHS....

Until then I'll just watch Tora Tora Tora... atleast that gives you a good leadup to WHY the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

The 45-minute attack footage is worth the price of admission to see on the big screen. I don't think it will be the same on the TV.

Saving Private Ryan's Normandy Beach footage certainly lost something on the small screen.

You know where the Uptown is Sandman?

Wonder if they are showing Pearl Harbor there... I bet the attack footage on that screen would kick some serious ass. :-)

I think Spitfire scenes were worth the price I paid to see the whole movie. To say the truth I didn't really care about the rest of the movie
Ohh and yes, I have to throw this one in, Eagle Sq. Spitfires were acctually from Polish 315, complete with RF designations and a polish AF sign on a right side of the fuselage. I guess someone really likes our Northholt Wing (308 in AH and 315 in WB)
