If I were to pick the cheapest conroe out there, the cheapest conroe motherboard out there, the cheapest 1GB stick of DDR2 800 to go with the conroe and mobo, and a semi-decent but not top-of-the-line card (Ge6800), all of which would be required to update my current non-conroe DDR AGP system, it would cost me well over $600!

Funny i can do it for $579 all on new egg.

Although I went with a 7600 gt 256 gddr3 and 2x512 sticks of ram.

I was also using newegg. Cheapest mobos for conroe run about 99 or more, the cheapest conroe was 200+, ram another 100+, video 160-ish. and plus shipping it came out to about 612.00, something like that.

That would be pretty cutting edge, with the conroe in there. Not THE best video, but pretty damned recent (technology-wise).
