How to deal with fever?
« on: February 19, 2001, 03:11:00 PM »
Ugh. One week of vacation, and I'm down with a temperature of 40.2C.

Am wondering if anyone has any untraditional ways of dealing with fever, other than the normal ones (such as codeine based painkillers, which I have none of)?

Man, I hate being sick. Happens once or twice a year, and right now, I am quite convinced that I am on the verge of death.

I am playing chess with the grim reaper.

What conforts me is that only the good die young, so I should be in the clear  .

So, postum if ya gottum. Am prepared to try most non too intrusive things  .

Get some orange brandy and mix 1 shot with hot tea and honey, lemon rind.  Take a mild bath, drink the hot tea afterward, go to bed with extra blankets on, and a BIG glass of water beside the bed..as you wake up during the night due to sweating under the covers, take a big gulp of water and go back to sweating under the covers.

Works for me.

Also, most fevers peak in the afternoon for some reason.

Did you know 56% of folks that come in contact with a virus get sick while on vacation or just after?

Your body acclimates to 'bio rythmes' of usual activity,ie. you get up the same time of day, eat pretty much on schedule, crap on schedule, during your normal work week...then, when you go on vacation, you screw your bio-rythmes up,you get up later, you do more, you eat different..so, what you are doing is lowering your bodies resistence to viruses.  Thus, you get sick on, or just after vacations if you come in contact with viruses.

It's that time of year, Santa. The weekend before last I went to see some friends in Leeds and we visited some student types and went out clubbing.

I caught something bad. I always get flu at this time of year - mixing with people in pubs/bars etc does it, I think.

Just getting over it now, and fortunately, it was non-venereal.

I usually just stay in bed and rest. I don't think there is a cure, you just have to relieve the symptoms. Drink lots of water and take pain-killers.

Get well soon!

Take a real hot bath, then run outside nekkid and jump in a snow-bank (if available, I'm in Nebraska don't ya know), then run back into the bath.  If you don't die within the hour your body will be too confused to keep up the fever.  Otherwise refer to Rip's post.

Get some hot peppers and eat a bunch. In an hour you will be so occupied with what's happening at the bottom end you wont even notice the fever.

Really I like Ripsnort's and a HOT bath. One of those baths that takes you 5 minutes to set down into while you acclimatize to it. By some zinc (30mg) and colloidal minerals. Take one zinc/day and the minerals at 1oz/100lb of body weight for the rest of your life. I haven't had a cold, flu, or anything in a year since I started. You really want to help yourself get the minerals and vitamins that come in the same liquid/colloidal mix in a bottle. Take them at 1oz/100lbs of body weight. Then take a teaspoon of gelatin everyday and it will help any joint and bone type problems you have. It's worked for me. The mineral vitamin mix tastes like hell.

The one I've heard works well (haven't tried it myself for fear of death) is similar to Rip's, but differs thusly...

Eat a large raw Spanish Onion, wash it down with
2/5ths of JackDaniels.
Make that bath as HOT as you can stand it, bathroom door closed to keep the steam in.

Repeat as necessary.

Best of luck to you Bro, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Drink a fifth of Bourbon. That night, you will forget all about your fever, and the next day the fever will be the least of your worries. And I think that if your blood alcohol level gets high enough it kills all the critters in your bloodstream

You should know better Santa... the cure is not far, it's found in Finland and is called "FPO"

Sex works for me, but it's been so rare lately that it'd work on ANYTHING

This won't cure the common cold or viral infections - but I'll guarantee it will shorten the severity and duration of it.

Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1-2 tablespoons of honey <to taste> in a 8-12 oz glass fill with water and stir well.

Drink this throughout the day/night for the duration of the illness. Honey has natural antibacterial properties and the apple cider vinegar will restore and keep your bodys PH on the acidic side of the scale.

Raising your body temperature, while you already have a fever, could be very dangerous.  I suggest cold baths instead of warm or hot ones.  If your body temperature gets to high the protiens in your brain will denature and that's a bad thing.

My suggestion is to read the boards for comedic relief only

The majority of suggestions wont help ya one bit! LOL!

If your fever persists for more than 2 days, see a doctor.  If its over 104-105, get yer bellybutton into an Emergency room cause thats very dangerous.

You should take either aspirin or acetaminophen only.  Ibuprofin does no good for reducing fever tho it will alleviate your aches.  Rest and fluids are a necessity.

You might also want to try a form of zinc called zinc gluconate along with Vitamins C & E.  These in tandem have been shown to reduce the length of symptoms and to boost the immune system.

Hope ya feel better
