How about assigning new players to a temporary squad that can get them started out on the right foot.

It would certainly help with the learning curve and maybe HTC would retain more of the 2 weekers.

An extra benefit would be perpetuating the community culture unless they were assigned to the FDB's.

And get pestered by a 8 year old? No thank you its what the training arena is for. I myself am mean to new people in the MA for not going to the TA to ask how do I takeoff? But, when i am in the TA i will help all of the 2 weekers i can. But, the fun ones are the ones that give attitude and call YOU a noob which is funny.

You would force people to become babysitters for the idiots if they wanted to actually help the noobs. I've watched the help channel on a few different occasions, and spent a little bit of time in the TA, and after that, I'm under the impression that jamming all of the squeakers and legitimate prospective customers into the same groups is an absolutely horrible idea.

New players that want to learn/stay HAVE a place to go. The TA.

And those that make a minimum effort and *want* to do so usually have no issue findign one of the big, vet Squads that takes them under their wing.

I agree with hubs, forcing them in a Squad wont do any good on their end: those that dont want to learn still wont do it - and those that make an effort dont need it.

How about letting them find their way like everyone else has. Also where is this attititude coming from lately that the noobs will not survive unless the omnipotent vets guide their every step. If you made it through okay I got news for you.... Everybody else can too.

 Plus who the hell are you to decide what the right foot is? Not everybody that's new is a sheep and wants to be assigned to a training squad where guys like you tell them whats right and wrong based on your taste of flying.
 How about leaving them alone , letting them enjoy the game and not trying to impose your ideas of what game play should be on them?

One reason the MA arena is more populated then the AVA or special events flying, is the freedom of choices. Start taking peoples chioces away as soon as they come in the door, they won't stay long.

While I certainly understand and applaud your desire to aid the new players in getting better, I must agree with the others that lumping them into a squad where others (who may not be willing to do so) babysit them may not be a good idea.  

I also agree with others that "how do I take off?" is an annoyance when you are trying to fend off the hoard.  My solution would be that the 2-weekers should have to attend a "basic training" session before they can actually enter the MA.  A quick 5 to 10 minute automated training session (set up in dialog boxes) could very easily explain to the new players how to start engines and get wheels off the ground.  After that they could learn how to release bombs and fire guns.  From there they could learn how to talk on range and radio channels as well as text channels.  As they accomplish the instructions in each dialog box they could then move onto the next lesson until they have enough information to get going and enter the MA.

ACMs would still be left to the group and experience to teach when they enter the MA but at least they would be able to get off the ground without the stupid questions, "what key starts the engine?  How do I get off the ground? What key fires the guns?  How do I drop bombs? etc."

I'm all for helping new people if it's your choice to do so.  I've benefitted from help simply by asking for it.  I do go into the TA from time to time to both get some practice and look around for someone without a trainer that may have some questions that I can answer or to fly target drone for them.

The help is there and it only takes a minimum of effort for new people to find it.

Simply ask and a veritable plethora of information will be sitting right there in your lap.

I think this is a good idea.  The analogy I think of is the training routines you have to go through before you can play online in America's Army.  

I wonder what HT thinks about this?  Probably has thought about it I bet.  Maybe too complex to execute for a sim like AH2?

Ahh what I missed was that these noob squads would be CO'd and manned by volunteers.  Maybe HTC could kick in a few free accounts for welcoming and helping new players.

How many new players do we lose because they got a cold shoulder or never asked for help?

Scenario Training Arena

im flyin around in a 109, and there is a noob 10 year old sitting on the runway for about 5 minutes in a P-51 ( still hasnt found out he can choose a different plane)

noob: sits in silence

me: hey push the throttle foward to get goin.

noob:......uh am i goin yet

me: lemme fly by an see

noob: YOU BETTER NOT SHOOT ME! YOU BETTER NOT SHOOT ME!

me: what?

noob: DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT SHOOTING ME OR ELSE!
