Why would this be news? He wanted to stay in the States for a very simple 3 letter word reason, tax. He'd have been taken to the cleaners if he'd gone back to good ol' Britain. He made most of his money here, he just decided not to take to to his former home and let the government have it. Big fat hairy deal.

the highest tax pracket in the late 70s was way up there, iirc & swiss accounts worked back then...
was it cause baseball is a ton better than soccer or that the NY art scene was way hotter than London & the artist yoko wore the pants in that relationship?

...Lennon also loved the way he could walk around NYC and while people noticed him at a glance, they didn't go all goofy and pester him...I remember him telling the story of how much he liked walking about the city and people would just nod or say 'Hi John'

how much influence did that have at the time do you think? I will admit I was not politically involved at that time in my life. I do remember it happening, but back then the beatles were in the media daily - so it was just another story

I recall that the ad was released around the time he was doing those publicity stunts, naked in bed with yoko ono.  not ever having liked beatles music and lennon especially, my opinion is obvious and just as obviously slanted.  I do think the pair were treated as eccentrics by the media and they probably did far more harm than good to themselves and their cause with those stunts.  I believe that soon after those ads ran, president nixon unleashed his attack cross dresser on them and fought to have lennon deported.

Having a file does not necessarily equate to being under investigation for wrong doing. Anyone who has or had a security clearance has an FBI "file".

Put the time foil hats away. Statistics without proper interpretation are meaningless.
