why are all the online sims

based in the U.S. ?

AW, AH, WB, WWII online, Everquest, FA, etc etc.

is it a matter of customer base?
economics?
government regulations?

There are talented programers all over the world but all the massively multiplayer games (that I know of) are US based.

just wondering.

Well, for starters, as of 1999 the US had more internet users (90 million) than the rest of the world combined (80 million).

Perhaps WWII is a bigger deal in the US then other parts of the world?

Also freedom and capitalism are still admired in the US.  Ya don't have to pay too much to the government so ya still have a chance to pursue your dreams without too much interference!!  Course our buddies  in Washington would like to change that!!

Well, first Fighter Ace was written by a Russian team from StPeterburg. One of the programmers, responsible for flight model, played WB (1.11 at that time). He said that he tried to make FM as close as possible to WB, but added spins (no spins in WB 1.11) and other effects. AFAIR it was implemented in a first version, called "Air Attack". But then M$ guys said that flight model is too difficult for an average arcade gamer, and now you can see the results...

Now the same team released a new product, in the West it is called "Echelon", in Russia - it's "Storm". The most beautiful "future" flight sim I have ever seen.

I know that it's not an online game, but the online game production experience must have helped that guys a lot.

Hehe, the "dueling rules" in Echelon are a copy of WB dueling rules, quadrant coordinates "x.y.z" are the same, and there are many other evidences that designers play online sims a lot

well, my expirience is the whole internet (in germany at least) was too much expensive.
I started surfing the Internet 94/95 and i call myself an internet pionier  
That time I paid each month approx $300 only for the ISP ! $300 more for the phone Company
each month (ok i WAS surfing alot). A total of $600 each month and i'm talking from '94/'95
You see, there was simply no market for an online game, nobody could afford it.
And today it looks better, since februar 2001 first time we have an ISP with a flatfee.
Its still not cheap enough for the mass, but way better then what we had the last years.

btw. what prices did you pay, say 94/95 to be online in the US ?

I paid $40 for PPP access in 1994.  I think I got 100 hours but I never went over.  It was a local call so the phone was no extra cost.

Before that I had CompuServe for which I paid a bit less, but it wasn't nearly as cool as PPP.

back in 94 and 95 I used Compuserve, wich had a set number of hours you could use and charged for each extra hour.

The bastards. Back then I used a 14.4 modem, and Compuserve purposely converted ALL images on their service to a higher file size .gif format, so that downloads would take longer, increasing your time online.

Bills could come as high as $170

It was a local call so that was free.


ahh the good ol' days.
downloading softcore porn, an image could easily take 5 minutes to download, only to see a cute girl showing her boobs and nothing else.
