Breaking News! It's time for the real war to begin!
« on: September 17, 2006, 03:55:03 PM »
Fork gets up off his chair, and walks up onto the stage.  The lone speakers stand has a single microphone, it's red light indicating a live mic.  He steps up to the mic, slightly lowers his head, and speaks.

Fork:  "Hi, my name is Fork. "

Crowd: "Hi Fork"

Fork: "I've been an Aces High addict for almost six years now. And I finding that my addition is not filling my needs.

With the new three arena's now in place, I do believe it's time that HTC move away from the game-play of three sides, Rooks, Bishops, and Knights,  and move into the real war we've been seeking - Axis versus Allies.

I know I'm the admin for the AvA arena, but I think with the separation of the generations of aircraft, we should enter the true Aces High - Axis versus Allies arenas - Early, Mid, and Late war for each series.

The tri-country model is old, and not conducive to the growth and the arena numbers that HTC seeks to create in this game.  There are a couple of reasons for this:

a) The three country model works only for a small and simple game design based strictly on simple air-vs-air combat, with limited strategy. Let's face it, Aces High is now a complex combat simulator with real-life tactics and strategies.  A two-sided war is truly independent of #'s of players.

b) The side balancing would truly be effective for a two country war.  Too many allies in the late war? No P-51's, Tempests, or late model Spitfires until the numbers balance out.

c) A two side war is really what the arena squadrons are seeking.  I can't speak for my squadron, but seeing the names like JG3-Udet, 490TH Battlin BullDogs, and 460 Sqn RAAF, it seems that players are trying to model history life in a game that doesn't match it.

d) History.  All of us are military history freaks.  I know I am, and I play other games including Silent Hunter, Call of Duty, and IL2, not because I want to 'play a game', I want to live history.  Living history in a fictitious three front war named after chess pieces, does not model history.

e) New player growth.  Ever time I speak to buddies who I convince to download and try Aces High are not impressed that you can fly a P-51 vs a Spitfire.  They are expecting to fly a P-51 against a Bf-109.  With new customers, we should match expectations with gameplay.   WWII Online has found that a two sided model works well, very well.

f) Headaches.  I think the three country model with all aircraft creates more problems than it worth.  Balancing three sides is a lot harder than two.

We all love this game.  It's time for the war to begin! Are you with me?"

Fork sets back from the microphone, looks at the crowd, and quietly walks back to his chair.

Someone in crowd: "who's this nut case?"

Someone else: "donno. He's the admin in the AvA Arena"

Somone: "Was the admin you mean (snicker). Maybe he has a point?"

Else: "Maybe, but it's Pyro's and Hitech's game. Let them decide."

Someone: "True. True. But he has a point."

Why not break AvA into a late, mid, and early war arenas like the MA?  That way you don't have to wait for a rotation that you like playing...

That was my point Soda - but break the MA into three arenas of Axis versus Allied.

Um, respectfully, I'd rather have the current setup. Those real life tactics and strategies you mention make for some pretty ****ty gameplay, IMO. Also, I'm not thinking that turning AH's cashcow into a mini CT would be a good move with CT due any month now.

I think a two-sided war would go a long way to address some issue eg low numbers during off-peak hours, side balancing (maybe). But 1, HTC has said a number of times that they've tried 2 sided wars before (in Warbirds i believe), and 3 sided, and they're convinced 3 sided is the way to go. So you'll have an uphill battle convincing them. 2, if the MA was an axis v allies war, the axis would be consistently outnumbered. Axis rides just aint as popular as the Allied rides, plain and simple.

PS - Fork, why havent you signed up to be a Kitchen Utensil with the rest of us? on namesake, you would fit in ;)

What I was trying to say is leave the MA alone(as it is now), and break up the existing AvA arena into three arenas like MA...

Ah yes - early, mid, and late war Axis vs Allied arenas.  Not sure if that would work considering our current low numbers.

Jackal - something a little more constructive and forum rule following. :p

Eagler and brother Spatual, have you seen the number of Axis squadrons listed in Squads? I think the # would be perhaps on par.  Again, isn't that what side balancing is for?

Some of you have made valid points - lots of talk on two sided vs three, but was it an ALL-AIRCRAFT two sided, or an Axis versus Allies two sided?

If that is the case, how can WWII Online survive? They don't have 2000 members, they have 12,500 subscribers.  That's TWELVE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED guys flying, soldiering, tanking, and gunning.  That's an Axis vs Allied arena.

But then again, maybe you're right?  Then again, asking the vocal minority may not be the best solution for HTC. It's the silent bobs/minority that make this game. :)

Well.........I tryed to find one of them flat, smooth river rocks instead of the brick, but the brick was the first thing I ran across. :D

I`ll translate my post: I don`t like the idea. My 2 cents.

Oh........what forum rule did I break this time? :)

YES!!! I can tell you my squad is all for it. Also, to balance things out, the allies dont get the Ar-234, the Me-163 or the Me-262. And perks dont come with you when you change sides! That way not everyone flocks to the allies, but the F-4U and the P-51 prevent everyone from going to the Axis.

I sure have. I have also seen the vast majority of the landing kills in mostly none Luftwaffe planes too.

Yes there are squads with Axis names and yes they do fly axis planes (most but not all of the time) but due to the fact that the late war allied planes so vastly outclass the Axis planes it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure where the "fair weather pilots" will fly.

No, this would only create the cries to "limit" the allied sides ability to fly certain planes and then we are back to restricting people's access to their preferred fun to satisfy others.

I am giving the current setup a chance but an implementation like this would most likely spell the end for me.

Bingo! Most people don't want to play there. So changing the format to the same thing in other arenas helps how?

The people who thought that the AVA was the best thing since beer in a can don't seem to be there much any more judging by the numbers located there when I log in to AH.

Just sayin'

i dont got enough perkies as it is and i like upen my lancs to kill 1 dang t 34 or wirble its fun droping 42 bombs
