Author Topic: Combo Guns -- You Really Use Them? (Read 322 times)

In several gun threads, combination guns have come up. They can be anything from handguns with interchangeable barrels of several calibers to long guns with interchangeable barrels as well as over and under rifle and shotgun combos.

Probably the smallest popular combo is the Ruger revolver with .22 LR and .22 WMR cylinders. Most other combos require different caliber barrels.

This thread is not about dual caliber guns like .357/.38 or similar calibers that can be used without changing barrels or feeders.

Here's the question: If you have one or more combination guns, how often do you use them compared to your regular one-diameter guns (including .357/.38 and similar that use the same barrel and feed without requiring any physical changes)?

For example, if you have a .45 pistol with the .22 pistol option (not the .22 that looks and handles like a .45), do you prefer shooting it or or do you prefer shooting two different .45 and .22 pistols?

So far I've had no need for a combo gun like a rifle/shotgun, but from time to time I'm intrigued by combo handguns like the two mentioned here.

Rossi's Braztech line is basically a butt-stock and firing mechanism that can accept any one of a number of barrels. 12 ga, 20 ga, 410 ga shotguns, .22LR, .22 magnum, .223, .243, .17, and maybe a few .30+ calibers. Any one of the barrels will fit on the base. Right now you buy it with 2 barrels, but they are soon to open up the shop selling you any barrel you want for your gun. Mine happens to be a 12 ga. / .22 magnum combo. The single shot 12 ga. is nice as a slug gun for deer hunting, or can make a decent bird / small game gun with the right size shot. The .22 magnum is a nice plinker and varmint round. I'm seriously thinking about adding a .223 barrel for it when they are available.

I have two of the Braztech Combos, and they offer good value with reasonable quality...

In overall concept, they are very similar to the New England Firearms products.

One is the youth model .22LR rifle - .410 shotgun that I bought as a training gun for my children. It has a shorter Stock length, and a narrower pistol-grip area for small hands.

The other is the standard 20 Gauge shotgun - .50 Caliber Muzzle Loading rifle.

As had been said above, Braztech (Rossi) plans to make add-on barrels available in the future, but it's current plans will require sending the receiver to the factory or at least an authorized service center to be fitted.

I'm going to have to stand by the 11-87 that has always stood by me. One minute you can shoot trap, the next you screw in the turkey choke for a luck shoot and finally swap out for the slug barrel for the slug shoot.

Don't forget the venerable Thompson/Center Contender.

Single-shot, breech action receiver. At one time there were about 50 different barrel/caliber combos to choose from, and the swith took 2 minutes, tops.

Still have mine, with a .44mag 14" bull barrel and scope.

Not sure what the range of available barrels is now, but still a fine handgun.

Because high powered rifles are not legal for deer hunting in ohio; you can use any pistol you see fit provided the casing is > 1" in length the contender comes in 30-06 and some other fine rifle calibers you can imagine what happens.

I'd never seen a pistol with a 14x rifle scope mounted on a tripod with mechanical fine windage/elevation changes.

I don't know if this rule changed in the last few years (they added the 1" empty casing rule) to read a straight casing like a .44mag. This was a few years ago.

Heh, where is the Smilie for embarrassed? Actually I'm not embarrassed, just, as my wife says, mildly obsessed.

I hadn't shot guns much for years, then after bestowing most my guns on my son, developed renewed interest in shooting. Figures, huh?

If I had any money I'd pick up a .22lr conversion kit for the 1911.
