I have a 533MHz FSB P5 2.66 GHz at the moment. Unfortunately my Socket775 mobo isn't going ot support Conroe. I'm sort of planning (in my head only, I can't afford to in reality!) on updating my PC.

I'm on AGP and DDR PC3200 at the moment, so if I upgrade to a conroe-compatible mobo I need a PCIE 3D card and DDR2 (800MHz?) ram.

Well that's a lot of money. Especially if I have to toss in a Conroe core. Heck the ideal one (the lowest 4MB cache one) is about $230!!

So I was wondering if I could get a socket775 motherboard that has PCIE and/or DDR2 but doesn't require conroe (and yet supports it for future upgrades).

Problem is it looks like the conroe-compatible mobos have FSB listed as: 800MHz/1066MHz.

Can you take a 533MHz CPU and put it into a 800MHz mobo? Will it just under-clock the motherboard? Or will it not even run??

There's just no cheap way to upgrade, it seems.

Scroll down to "Supported CPUs". Looks like it supports yours and "Core2" which is Conroe. I would guess any Socket T mobo will work.

Well it says it supports that type, but I wasn't sure if it meant "chips of that type, but running at 800MHz FSB minimum" or not.

It will work. It wont be fast but it will work. Main problem is going to be with the DDR2 memory. You really cant take good advantage of it with a slow processor, and underclocking your FSB is esentially going to drop your memory bandwidth into the toilet.

Well I'm not going to upgrade for a while, then. Even a mid-range upgrade is going to cost me $600 or so. I just replaced almost all these parts December of last year, as well, so it's a real PITA that everybody went PCIE and left us AGP'ers behind!

Actually, I have read your threads and I see a method to your madness. But like the old expression goes, "you can't polish a terd". Now if u can get that visualization out of your mind, u cant get this idea of a conroe out of your mind as well.

Your kinda looking at upgrading, just not what you need. Get a Conroe board that supports AGP and DDR, carry over your Video card and ram and upgrade the CPU down the road. ASRock has a budget board that would be perfect for your needs.

Wardog: Eventually I want conroe, however I also eventually want PCIE, because PCIE video cards are being given 2x the performance of top-of-the-line AGP cards right now, and that's only going to get worse. They're also cheaper than their AGP counterparts. Also when you find a GeForce 7800 in PCIE and in AGP, the AGP has half the pipelines disabled.

So basically I want PCIE. Conroe can wait til I win the lotery

It's much cheaper to upgrade 3D card than to buy a conroe... Or at least, I thought it was...

Dude, read my post again.. Look at the Specs listed, then read all the way to the bottom right.

AGP & PCI-E 16x..... The board supports both cards..

LOL, man.. when reading a post start at the top left corner and work your way to the bottom right hand corner, but most imortantly read everything in between.

EDIT: hm.... I'm liking that mobo. Liking it a lot.

Question though: It says the PCIE slot is only 4x not 16x. I don't know much about the speed multipliers (I think it's the available bus paths??) but does this mean a good PCIE video card would be bottlenecked severely? Or does it mean nothing, as most PCIE video cards don't use (for example) even half of the available bus paths?
