A lot of work left to do, but...

First stab at nose-art
Need to finish the panel lines
Need to reposition the fuselage insignia

Also, anyone got a recommendation for completing those nasty short lines on the front lip of the cowl? I get some serious squiggle from the wrap around the model in that location...

As discussed in the thread about the 8thFG one I'm doing, those early-model jugs didnt have the tapered cowl flaps like our D11 does.

Make the flaps straight like on the profile, thats accurate for a D4 or D5.

I'm not exactly sure which "nasty short lines" you're referring to, but I find a lot of the distortion caused by the flat texture being applied to a curved surface can be eased by working with the texture twice the sixe of normal (ie.- enlarge a 1024 skin to 2048 pixels). Something about the way it goes a bit fuzzy when you shrink it back down seems to help blend it in.

Thanks Treize...I didn't even notice the rectangular cowl flaps. I looked at a picture of Fiery Ginger I in order to position the nose art, and didn't even notice the cowl flaps being square. I'll change that.

I'm talking about the warping of the line that should go from the forward most vertical line on the cowl to the front lip of the cowl. I've got the lower line on there. But that top one throws me for a loop. I'll take your advice and see what I can make happen...

Just do your best on the cowl ring lines. I didn't have TOO much of a problem with 'em.

Still a ways to go...

Fixed the cowl flaps

Added wheel covers. Wasn't sure on the colors since my source photo was b/w. So, I swagged it.

Trying to simulate that faded OD color. The blur kind of screwed up the paint at the top of the cowl, but I'll figure that out later.

I thought about doing Fiery Ginger III, but then realized I coudn't find a serial number for the aircraft. Then, I didn't have pictures of IV showing the camo pattern transition from OD to grey along the fuselage. I suppose I could have done this one--the only real difference is that IV has kill markings, and I does not--at least from the pictures I have. And, the camo transition would be kind of generic, since I can't see the back of the fuselage. I don't know if anyone has any pictures of I or IV showing the aft portion of the fuselage or not. I got my pictures from Osprey Aicraft of the Aces--P-51 and P-47 Aces of the CBI and the Pacific...
