Went to stand up, nothing special, when a powerful electric "jolt" shot down my legs and dropped me to the floor. From there I couldn't move, my lower back felt like a screwdriver had been jammed into my spine and the bones were kinked.

I felt like that dorky old lady on TV, "Ive fallen and I can't get up!"

My neighbor is a stunt man who knows a thing or two, he does this back cracking mojo that instantly alowed me to at least stand up under my own power.

So looks like I'm headed to the chiopractor, and using this as an excuse to buy a new computer chair.

Any decent chairs out there for bad lower backs?.. that somebody has used? might get a new bed too.

KICK ARSE chair. probably the best out there, and it is government certified for ergonomics (meaning if your employere provides this chair for you you can not sue over any "injuries" you got sitting all day)

best friend installs office furiture and heads the service dept... he has 3 of those @ home, and they are awsome!

expect to pay close to $1000 minium for a decked out chair retail, up to $1700 IIRC.

just priced one out online with the lumbar support $978

Sounds to me like a pinched siatic nerve(i cant spell it)

it thats the case you need to get a back brace/kindey belt type thing to wear.

Ive had the siatic problem and it was a case where turning the torsso while walking or standing would shoot a jolt from my bellybutton cheek right down the back of my let to my heel.

I know this is a lame answer but don't sit so much. If I sit all the time I get back spasms like you are describing. I went from a desk job to a job where I'm on my feet 6 hours a day, and voila no more back problems.

Welcome to my world, happened the exact same way to me the day before 9/11. Buldging disc was resting against my cyatic nerve.

Chiropractor will help, but unless your insurance covers it, it could be expensive. Start learning some exercises for the back and if you're lucky like I am, that disc will back off the nerve.

You should go get an MRI to make sure, and if it is a buldging use ice treatments. Ice the location for 15 minutes every hour, will help that disc to shrink, and I hope you're not allergic to ibuprofen.

Start by getting a good check up by an Ortho doc. This is in addition to a chiropractor to get ya moving in the short term. If the Orto guy says there is a chance of disk problems he'll oreder the MRI. Prepare to be very bored on the MRI table. No movement for about 10 minutes or so for a full lower spine scan.

Oh and, welcome to my world. It's a real Beeotch ain't it? When the doc tells you about exercises to strengthen the lower pelvic girdle and back get ready for some additional pain.

I take a generic form of Aleve that goes by the name of Naproxin Sodium at Wallyworld. Non prescription and a good anti inflamatory. Same stuff the Doc gave me in a prescription, just half the dosage of the scrip.

Do not take the first Dr. opinion alone if they start talking surgery right away. Get at least a second opinion.

A change of chair won't be the magic bullet either. You will need to start limiting your sitting time. No more than an hour without a break to walk a bit and loosen up the spine.

Thanks dudes, if thats "the" chair, I'm on it... I'll bet I can write it off tax time.

Went to the chiropractor, got adjusted...huge relief. I'll need a few adjustments a week for awhile to straighten things out.. luckily its not too bad, my condition is fairly common.... sigh, at 38.

My left leg is still numb, and even weirder every hair fell out...looks sexy.

Man, that harsh electric jolt that slammed my legs was uncool, felt what a car battery shock would feel like, only x10, that hits like a home run swing. I have a new respect for nerves.

Now that I'm feeling like a proper old man, I guess its time to buy a Muscle car and leave my wife for a 22 year old named Bunny.

as soon as you can, find a class or pick up a dvd on hatha yoga - they have specific postures which target your back and stomach
the majority of back issues are related to poor stomach muscle tone - as the gut hangs out, it puts un-natural stress & strain on the lower back.
regular yoga routines (about 20-30 minutes a day) does more to stabilize my back than anything I have tried.

as for the herman-miller, check out eBay for a deal on one once you have researched them and know exactly what you are looking for.
