OT Foyle's War Spitfire??

Last night in the British WW2 TV detective series there was a Spit IX doing some low level flying. Anyone know what Spit this is?

It was being used for low level radar testing in the area of Hastings. What radar station was nearby? Also did the Brits have a rotating radar at this time (1940 - post BoF, pre BoB )?

What station would the Spit been based at as the pilot was billited in Hastings?

Actually his IFF went for a crap on one test flight at night and he had to crash land. He thought someone had sabotaged it.

The Spit in Foyles war that Foyle's son flies is Spitfire Vb BM597 owned by the Historic Aircraft Collection and flown by Clive Denny or Charlie Brown most of the time.

I'm guessing Hawkinge would have been the base as I know the Spit XIIs of 91 Squadron were covering Hastings in 43.  I think the rotating radar was artistic license on the series part.

A very good series btw.

I think they spliced in some other shots as I remember seeing individual exhaust pipes.

I like when Andrew lights the match in the fuel dump.:eek:

I enjoy the series. Foyle's driver reminds me of my niece.

I'll have to look again.  I have that series on DVD.  If there was another Spit it was probably MH434 which has done a ton of film work, or Rob Lamplough's Spit VIII MV154 which I know was used in "Dark Blue World" along with BM597.

The ground shots and much of the flying is the Spit Vb though.

I've seen Charlie Brown and his Spit. Even got a pic of him walking from it. It's blurry though, I was laughing so hard when I saw his mustache ;)

Beachy Head provided low level raid cover for the the south Channel coast between Brighton and Hastings.

iirc the rotation was initially provided by a guy pedaling a stationary bike geared to the antenna

Foyle’s War… I was rather impressed with this show. Unfortunately I’m a Yank and here in America foreign TV programs aren’t very popular, sigh… For about three months, I caught Foyle’s War On PBS (Public Broadcasting Service). Then suddenly PBS dropped the show for reasons unknown to me. Here in the States, PBS isn’t very popular and PBS relies solely on donations from its viewers.

After watching Foyle’s War from England, The Red Green Show from Canada, numerous British films, and lastly The Ronnie John’s Half Hour from Australia, I think it’s time that us Yanks broadened our TV programming to include foreign film and shows. After all, I can’t be the only Yank that’s tired of “reality shows.”

I'm sorry I can't help you with your question, but I felt compelled to comment about this show.
