T-34 question.
« on: September 29, 2006, 06:38:43 AM »
How many AP rounds from a T-34 should it take to kill another T-34? The reason I ask is, the other night I was in the EWA, and rolled up behind a T34. I shot him 14 times, 12 in the rear at D200 or less. Solid hits, not ricochets, before he exploded. In the same sortie hit another 6 or 7 times, once in track, others in the turret, range was the same about D200. He hits me 3 times, first in right track, tracks me, second in front armor. Then he rolls behind me, and with last shot in my rear, kills me. I'm not one to normally complain, but this seems a little suspicious.
I check in offline arena and it took 9 hits in rear to kill T-34.
Any thoughts?

I would like to know an answer also. BMNot, was this Wednesday afternoon?  I was in EWA and got stuck at a VH that got captured just as I spawned.   I drove around firing at a T-34 at ranges under 200 feet.  At one point we were both setting about 50 - 60 feet apart just shooting at each other.  then 2 more T-34s spawned and began firing at me.  There were a ridiculous number of hits before I finally died and Crash got the kill.
I hit one T-34 at least 10 times at various points on the tank and never got a kill.
I spent some time off line at about 100 foot range and tried Tiger vs T-34, 1 - 2 shots T-34 dead.  Panzer vs T-34 2, sometimes 3 shots T-34 dead.  T-34 vs T-34, 15 shots dead, sometimes 5 shots dead.   I got real close on T-34 vs T-34 with about 50 feet, zoomed in and fired at different spots on rear of the T-34, then treads/tracks, hatches, sides, turrent, turrent ring, mantel.  I fired 85 rounds of AP ammunition at 50 feet and got 4 kills.   I never got a kill on the same spot.

Not,
I understand you on this one and wish I could tell you.  My experiance last night made me wonder as well for the Tiger and all other GV's.  I roll a Tiger to defend a freashly captured base from the nme v-spawn.  I and DHawk are out hitting the spawn and all is going well.  Then we start getting low on ammo and we also have two Panzer's slip past on the far side of us and DHawk goes in pursuit of them and I stay back to try keeping the not only down, but cover him as well.  He nails one Panzer and then trackers the second one, both with one shot.  Then a Flak rolls in behind him and starts riddling him with his main gun.  DHawk begins to start smoking but still has his gun, turns and flattens the Ostwind with one shot.  All while I have no shot on this guy, DHawk rtb's for a new tank and ammo... I stay back and defend, 12 kills, 13, 14, 15, and then it happens... I hear the dreaded ping ping ping ping of a small cal. machine gun shooting me... I look around and here is a damn Jeep.  He smokes my engine!!! I turn and drop him with a nice shot to the guys face (yes you still do get a hit-sprite off of the drivers face) :rofl   Then a Flak rolls around and tracks me! WTF! I shoot him 5 times! A FLAK!   Get him and then a panzer comes around and tracks my other side, I am finally level again and can shoot but am down to about 3 rounds of AP.... I hit the Panzer and get blasted by him at the same time.... 17 kills and a lost Tiger all due to a Jeep that takes out my engine....  Always wondered how a Tigers main gun can get a ricochet off a small vehicle like a jeep, M16 or flak...  Only HTC knows... and we can just keep killing....

I hate T-34. Some of the same reasons, plus I like the pintle for diving aircraft. Seems slower now than before too. And some bum tried the drive inside trick when I was in panzer the other day, so I backed up and shot him. He was in a panzer with no turret, though. Tiger's, I'm ready to give up on. I've flipped over several, for no apparent reason usually. Got one killed by auto field gun FAST once too.

Actually, is there a min range to get max effectiveness from the main gun in ah2?

I think for battle tanks below some min range the round doesnt develope full power so maybe 200 yards is to close?

The T-34 (German designation: T-34/76) was the original tank with 76.2mm gun.

Model 1940 (T-34/76A)—Early production run with interim L-11 76.2mm tank gun in a two-man turret.
Model 1941 (T-34/76B)—Main production with heavier armour and the superior F-34 76.2mm gun, diesel engine.
Model 1942 (T-34/76C)—Many minor manufacturing improvements.
Model 1943 (T-34/76D, E, and F)—New cast hexagonal turret, nicknamed "Mickey Mouse" by the Germans because of its appearance with the twin, round turret-roof hatches open. Main production had a new commander's cupola.
T-34/57— Fewer than 324 T-34s in 1941 and 1943–44 were fitted with the ZiS-4 or the ZIS-4M high-velocity 57mm gun to be used as tank hunters (Wachowski 2004). Some of them took part in the Battle of Moscow.
The T-34-85 (T-34/85) was a major improvement with a three-man turret and long 85mm gun.

Model 1943—Short production run of February–March 1944 with D-5T 85mm gun.
Model 1944—Main production, with simpler ZiS-S-53 85mm gun, radio moved from the hull into a turret with improved layout and new gunner's sight
The T-34 was an outstanding balance of all three throughout its World War II life cycle. In 1941 its thick, sloped armour could defeat all German anti-armour weapons at normal ranges. T-34s could be knocked out only by the towed 88mm Flak guns or at close range by 50mm and 75mm short-barrelled tank guns. The majority of German tanks in 1941 did not have 75mm guns; indeed 37mm guns were far more common. By mid-1942 the T-34 was vulnerable to improved German weapons and remained so throughout the war, but its armour protection was equal to comparable tanks such as the US M4 Sherman or German Pzkw-IV. In terms of firepower, the T-34's 76mm gun could penetrate any 1941 German tank with ease. This gun also fired an adequate HE round. In 1943, the 76mm was out-ranged by the Panther's long 75mm and the Tiger's 88mm. The introduction of the Soviet 85mm gun in 1944 did not make the T-34-85 equal in firepower, but the 85mm could penetrate both Panthers and Tigers at reasonable ranges.

No.  A round begins decelerating as soon as it leaves the muzzle.  Force = Mass X Acceleration so as the round slows after leaving the barrel the force goes down.  Since AP rounds rely on kinetic rather than explosive energy to penetrate the closer you are the better.

i found this .. so there was real life t-34 vs t-34 combat

Captured T-34/76 was designated by the Germans as Panzerkampfwagen T-34 747(r). Large number of T-34/76 tanks was captured and pressed into service .

http://www.achtungpanzer.com/t34.htm

that website also shows range/penetration charts for the T-34 if that helps

on a interesting note

In February of 1944, T-34 was rearmed with the new long-barreled 85mm S-53 gun and then in mid-1944 with 85mm ZIS-S-53. This new gun could penetrate the side armor of the Tiger I from a distance of 800 meters and the turret side from a distance of 600 meters. It was not enough-as before, the Tiger could destroy the T-34 from a distance of 1,500 to 2,000 meters. 85mm AA gun was the anti-aircraft gun without any special modifications. The S-53 was a modified version designed by the F.F.Petrov's Design Bureau to be mounted in the turret of T-34-85. The ZiS-S-53 was a modified S-53 designed by Grabin's Design Bureau in order to simplify the gun and reduce its price, while ballistic of both guns were same.

The 76.2mm ZIS-3 cannon, using anti-tank shells, could penetrate Tiger side armor (at 300-400 meters) or destroy the running gear, while it couldn't penetrate the frontal armor.

T34 gun had greater penetration than its armour thickness (I'd need to double check that and consider that I am not cerain of the accuracy of the source).  So, 1 round should do it, in the right circumstances.
