We will not tolerate a failure to be tolerant
« on: September 29, 2006, 02:32:33 PM »
Hi All,

Once again, I'm going to show a total lack of common sense in posting something.

Got sent this article and the follow-up on the saga of a family that made the mistake of exercising their free speech in an unpopular manner, via a sign in their front yard.

It reminded me of my own experiences back in the 90s when the work-based Christian Fellowship I belonged to was subjected to the same kind of intimidation. Ads we put up were constantly vandalized or stolen, meetings were disrupted, and I came a hair's breadth away from losing my job.

I should point out that I merely post the following as an example of the kind of "hate crime" the media isn't interested in, and doesn't generally report. Whereas, had the situation been reversed, they would have been all over it. I'm not angry or surprised about it, neither do I expect or demand that the situation improve. I fully expect the opposite. It does strike me however as yet another example of the spiritual truth behind Eph. 6:12, 1 John 3:13, John 15:19, Prov. 29:27 and so on...

Anyway, my favorite line from the articles below is: "I don't know about all that," she said. "We just think the idea of a mooing dog is ridiculous."

Believe me, where I live every round of local elections is always preceeded with media stories about lawn sign vandalism.  I have seen more than one story just this past month about anti-war sign vandalism.

I don't see how arson would NOT make your local news.

"No part of me believes that we are the only ones who feel this way, so why isn't everybody else who's feeling this way standing up?"

Good question. I suspect it's fear of the intolerant whackos who want freedom of speech to mean freedom to express only authorized PC views. You never know when they might slash your tires, set your yard, or perhaps even your home on fire.

Wouldn't it be nice if everybody minded their own business?

Otherwise lets get this over with, a gays versus church goers death match, winner take all. Its not like either side is going to one day change their collective minds anytime this century, so the endless bickering will continue.

They will NEVER agree, there is no room for debate, discussion ends and common ground evaporates when one side alleges they are obeying the wishes of a higher power... the higher power is right and thats all you need to know.

That's an interesting read

You know, me being the technology guy I am, after the second swiping, I wouldve invited the media with all their night vision equipment over to catch the twit who keeps doing it.

But...knowing the media, the moron would be acclaimed for their activism.

Can't let those christian monsters speak their mind, you know

Reminds me of the time someone vandalized my car by ripping off my Darwinfish. Must not have liked me exercising my 1st amendment rights. Probably forgot the "thou shalt not steal bit" though...

Someone stole the "Support our troops" magnetic ribbons from my wife's car. Dunno if they are anti-war or just plain ole thieves. I can understand kids doing things like breaking windows or even starting fires but I don't understand how an adult can do these sort of things. Guess there are some real losers out there.

maybe the guys who take magnetic darwin or support the troops stickers off cars have no politcal or religious agenda and are.......

vandals.

maybe you are making too much of it.. kids wander around vandalizing about everything they think they can get away with... they have no reason other than.... vandalism.

They are most likely to vandalize a advertisement that is on some "old persons" car and is easily removed in seconds.

I would have a "support the troops" sticker on my car even if i hated the war.

Supporting the troops and beeing against the war has nothing to do with eachother.

One of the more common crimes by kids when I was young was stealing the hood emblem from cars. They stood vertical at the front center of the hood and were held on by a spring loaded cable wire. Just bend it, cut the wire with wire cutters and you were on your way. It was very common, probably why they don't have them anymore

Hoopy, I'm sorry, could you clarify your non-verbal expression? Were you trying to indicate that someone stole your favorite blue-eyed hippy poster from your car? Do you think it was a pro or anti-war statement or some sort of South Park thing?

Vandalism is bad indeed, but interestingly enough the article makes my original point. A local paper managed to find one incident of vandalism possibly related to the "Moo" campaign and ran with it. They are outraged that a window was broken and assert that this is a "hate crime" although the perps left no message, made no threats, and have not repeated the action. In fact we obviously have a community obviously chomping at the bit to use any incident, no matter how minor, as evidence of "hate crimes" -

Quote
"Two days later, she sent letters of complaint to Mayor Lionel Rivera, District Attorney John Newsome and the Colorado Springs Police Department.

"I am a lesbian in a wonderful, committed 9-year relationship," Cyndi wrote. "We live in a supportive neighborhood with our daughter. The "political' sign in my daughter's car window is the Norman Dog who says Moo ... the one that is supposed to stimulate conversations about being gay. And what do we get? Vandalizing homophobes, terrorizing in the dead of night, plus an unresponsive community to our experience of hate and violence."

"Terrorizing Hate and Violence?" This is a broken window, not the Danish Cartoon riots, for that matter it isn't notes saying: "The purpose of this document is to inform not only you, but all who share your anti-gay or any other discriminatory beliefs, your world is about to change. … SO TAKE WARNING! Your life, your government and the world as you know it is about to change. YOU ARE EITHER WITH US OR AGAINST US!" or lawn fires for that matter.

For what it's worth, while I disagree with the methods and aims of the note writer above, I think he or she is essentially correct in how they framed the issue.

Ah well, it's going to be an interesting century to put it mildly.

If only the christian right were in power and were a majority in this country... then things would be better!
