Thanks everyone.

I agree moot. As I said at the top of the thread I had not pushed these through any photo editing s/w. I was very happy to have figured out why my contrast was 'off'. These were all test shots to see if the new settings would make the difference I was looking for.

In only 3 clicks I was able to enhance the last shot from this:

to this:

3 weeks in...I'm feeling encouraged:)

The edited pic doesn't show up for me, in that last post.
I think it's promising that you can take the criticism and carry on improving your craft as you've been doing.

An uncle of mine seems to have made a fortune (near millions I think) as a photographer.
I asked him if he'd have some tips for me to remember, were I to ever take it up as a hobby, or more.  The gist of his reply was to stick to film, for the near future at least (digital cameras apparently are made for a short lifespan), and to do black and white.
Taking nice pictures, aestheticaly, wasn't the skill I'd have to learn most, but knowing what was going on, and anticipating what was going to happen, so that you'd have your eye through the lens and finger on the trigger when the "right moment" happened.
He said he didn't even look at and develop his pictures, till days or weeks, sometimes months after taking them.

For those who don't know how big these pics can be, this is the center crop from the above pic at its normal size before 'reduced to fit desktop'

I still can't see that edited pic :)
You know about the 1/2 size effect, right?  It might not apply to such large resolutions, but halving pixel sizes usually scales down with less jaggies.

Thanks moot.

I don't know why the edited shot is not showing for you. Is anyone else having a problem? It's showing for me ok.

If it's still not working tomorrow I will repost it:)

Nice shots and I definitly see the improvement. Keep it up. I look forward to seeing some winter time shots with the even higher contrast available.
