Sorry to say, it is not the plane, it is the pilot.  But if you want a best of the best, you have to define the purpose of the plane.

1.  Air Superiority
2.  Ground Attack (GV's)
3.  Ground Attack (Hard Targets)
4.  Bombing missions
5.  Long Range Bomber Escort
6.  Base Defence
7.  NOOB plane
etc
etc
etc

Once you define the purpose, you will get a lot of differnet answers.  I love the c.205 for fighters, but it is not the most capable plane.

F4U-4
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Hmm...

One would also have to include skill level of the pilot.
Generally I'd say the best overall plane to use in most air-to-air encounters by the vast majority of pilots would be the Spit XVI.  What an incredible ride.  E-retention, great gun package, roll and climb rates...the bird is fun to fly, and frustrating to fight against.

For #1 it really depends on the pilot. How you fly the plane how well you know the other factor. How much fuel does each plane have? What altitude is each plane meeting at? Heck how the merge starts off.

Hmm...P-38 meets pretty much all those except for #7.

If I was leading a nation into a real war using WWII tech and I could only pick one fighter for my nation, I would take the F4U.  It brings the most capabilities to the table of any single fighter, and it does most of them very well.

And I say this from the standpoint of somebody who is not an F4U fan, but rather a Spitfire and Mosquito fan.
