B-26 Low Level Raid...Part II
« on: April 05, 2000, 09:29:00 PM »
Ok, soon the newness may wear off of this low -level stuff (I doubt it though, its too much fun), but we tried to push our luck again tonite.  This time in Knightland.

Planes: 4 unescorted B-26's.

Pilots: Sniper, HappMSKT, JagDnine, Cobra. (already we should know we are in trouble...hehe).

Target: Knit Dar

Flight Profile: Leave from F5 and NOE all the way to pop-up point near Knit Dar.

Well, one of us got the bright idea to try this thing again (Sniper is now cleaning pots and pans behind the mess hall for this one).

We took off from F5 on the same mission profile as the night before when the target was Bish Dar.  (Who the hell at HQ hates us for sending these missions our way all the time)

Anyway, this mission was a little bit tougher.  The Knits smelled something was rotten and had a P-51 doing a fighter sweep.

Sniper kept his cool though, and ordered us to stay low (I've got the tree branches in the bomb-bay doors to prove it).  The con shadowed us, but never got within icon range.

We reached our pop-up point and that's when all hell started to break loose.  The Knit 51 made his attack run on us while we were grabbing alt to 10k.  He made his attack pass at Happ, but the gunners knocked out the pony's radiator and forced the pony to  ditch, with Happ undamaged and in formation.

Well, that was just the beginning, 3 more bandits came the call over the RW (the voices were raised abit higher now..hehe).

JagDNine was having engine problems and had fallen back from the formation and so a Knit 109 and Pony took after him.  That left 3 of us alone long enough to drop the eggs on target!

But this is where the tables turned.  A knit F4U, Pony, and Spit ripped through our formation and very quickly Happ and Sniper went down.  Thankfully, chutes were spotted jumping from both of our Bombers.

That left me alone...so very alone...and it didn't take long...a spit and a F4U came after me, I got the spit, but he took most of my left wing off, and the Hawg finished me off (nice shooting AKDejaVu!).

We did knock out the dar, and because of this, the Musketeers were also able to grab F2.

Was a blast again!

Cobra out!

I had just finished flying three straight 47 missions as the knights finally reclaimed their northern bases.  It had been a pretty successful group of sorties.  The one time I was shot down I managed to pull the 1 enemy fighter away from another 47 in the area allowing a CAP.  I was feeling pretty good.

Rocket, Bullzi and myself had been coordinating the strikes.  Rocket was cover, Bullzi bombed and I flew drunk.  After taking those bases, we decided to level 5 and 6 since they were rook bases and the rooks were coming up in force from them.  Bullzi and Rocket grabbed buffs, while I got escort duty.

I came up at f2 and decided to fly toward Rocket who had come up f1.  I was in autoclimb at 14k when the call came:

"4 low cons se of F3"

I knew what was going on.  It was Cobra and his band of misfits heading for our dar.  I set a course for immediate intercept.  I spotted a con that had a high 51 swooping down on it.  Remembering Cobra's last post on the subject I continued on past the decoy and kept the WEP on towards the 3 cons in the distance.

It was going to be close.  I was cruising at 350 knots after dropping 3k to get a tad bit below the incoming 26's.  It was simply too close to call.  I aproached the 26 bringing up the rear and shot straight up once below the 26.  As I closed to 700 yards.. the bomb that dealt the final blow was released.  This bomber was going to pay! I somewhat blew the shot landing a few pings but not doing any damage.. I rolled inverted and leveled on the tail section and fired until it disintegrated.

At this time, I found myself in a position that I wanted to avoid.. but knew I couldn't.  After swooping up into the trailing 26, I entered gun range for the two lead 26 tailgunners.  I started to take a few pings.  I had one focus at this time... to get back into that weak spot.  I dove until the gunning stopped and started to swoop up again.  This time the trailing 26 banked hard to the left.  It took him out of gunning range of the other 26 and made him an easy target.

The last 26 was 3000 yards away.  He began a slow dive to egress the area and was keeping his distance pretty well until I began to dive too.  I was just starting to gain on him when a spitfire came in from above and dove at the surviving 26.  He came in at the 26 from his high 6 with pretty good closure.  He was no match for the 26's gunner.  The 26 began to smoke as every control surface came off of the Spit.  Now I was really pissed.

I noticed the spit was slowing and figured the spit had hit something critical.  A brief kill message told me the pilot was Cobra.  Yeah.. you were going to pay all right.  As I closed, Cobra was trying to fight a partially dislocated wing.  I unloaded from low and behind and kept firing until there was an explosion.

So, SALUTE!!! to the guys that flew the mission.  The whole thing was a blast for me from the time I heard the "4 low cons" call.  I only wish I could have got there in time  I respect the way you came in with a plan... not playing the game... rather fighting the war.  You stuck with your aircraft even when a bail would have prevented me from getting a kill.  Once again.. Nice job guys.

BTW.. I have a video of the whole thing

AKDejaVu,

Wow that is a great read.  Hell I almost started pulling for ya there

That mission was alot of fun and now to read the account from the other side, it makes it even more satisfying to know that each side worked the tactics and had fun doing it.

Again, <S> to those dastardly Knits that sniffed out our plan and tried to deny us our goal of giving the rear area weenies a rough time of it.

As for Hang, me thinks I would like to avoid that pony of yours if I can...hehe.

Cobra out!

I was the high 51 diving on JagDnine. Was coming in at his high 2 o'clock, but underestimated his manuver and wound up coming in on his 5 o'clock and raking his tail as I came across. I thought, @#$%, that ain't enough, need to extend and try again. I look back and see Jag heading for the deck. I roll over and begin my pursuit when I see on the buffer...You shot down JagDnine. I continued on but didn't see him any longer. BTW JagDnine, ya did force me to ditch, took out my radiator. Salute.
