AH Crashing...think its the GCard
« on: September 26, 2006, 09:14:00 PM »
Hi Guys, I have recently built myself a new PC and I haven't really made any attempt to optimize it but it seems to work fine except for AH.  I can login ok and play the game for some extended periods but after a while I get a black screen and then the XP error message that the program has crashed (no real info, just send error report).  I can then relogin but on occasion I can't, I get the same error on AH startup with a black screen in the corner, click ok on the error msg, send report and I'm back at the desktop.
Anyway, after reading some of the problems others have been having I have saved the Dxdiag report (below) to see if anyone can spot the problem.

Hope its enough...
Cheers

check your power supply voltages and cpu/case temperatures.
I had that after I upgraded my vcard and pushed the power supply beyond its limits. It would play AH for a while then crash. A new power supply, new heat sink for the cpu and an additional case fan has resolved my issues.
You will se the issue in AH first before any other app as AH pushes a computer much harder than anything else I do including video editing.

Thx Eagler...its a new PC with 450w power supply the fans are both working fine....with regard to the fans, are u suggesting its getting too hot?
I have monitoring software that warns me as soon as it passes the 60 deg C mark (currently running at 33 deg C at last crash 10min ago) but no problem there...the thing is sometimes the whole PC crashes (not the norm) and sometimes just AH crashes...checked the event viewer and this is what it says

Faulting application aceshigh.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module aceshigh.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x001266d6.

Is this a Graphics memory address ??

Cheers

Put Sound accel one notch down (so its at the second notch from right), which is called "3/4" sound accel by most people but i think it is actually "2/3" sound accel. Also if you use custom sounds move back to default ah sounds.

If that does not fix it try to run the ram at more conservative settings.

As others mentioned might be overheating of the graphic board or problems with the power supply, if your graphic board has an additional direct power input use it and use it with a cable branch which is only connected with the graphic board (use diffrent ones for the drives).

With the monitoring software i assume you are monitoring CPU temp, see if you find a way to monitor Graphic board temp as well. You need NVTweak or something like that to switch it on.

I had stability problems with full hw acceleration on sound with that chip, as well as quality problems with 1/3 accel... so if the 2/3 position doesnt fix it its somethink else.

Lockups come from the strangest places. Back around the time of Fire Over Malta, I was freezing up every 30 minutes after online flight. Offline didn't do this. I would literally freeze the image on my screen, be unable to do anything (this isn't a crash, it's a total lockdown).

Well the sound would stutter, but the image would stay the same. This made me think maybe it was the sound card. It made me check the  video card. It made me check several settings in windows and my BIOS. I *thought* I had found the problem -- that is, I knew how to bypass it. I was using onboard NIC at the time. I popped in a PCI NIC and disabled the onboard NIC in my BIOS and the problem went away.

Bad NIC, right? That's what I thought for a long LONG time. Heck I even badmouthed the manufacturer before getting over it. Then after 6 months my power supply started dipping lower and lower on the +3V rail, to the point I was afraid for my PC's life. I got a real PSU, a decent one. 400W (previous one was 425W, but crappy brand) and guess what?

The NIC worked 100% fine. It was the lack of voltage that was totally screwing over my system through my NIC card. Don't ask me why. Don't ask me how. A new PSU totally fixed it and I've been using the onboard NIC with AH2 with no problems since I upgraded the PSU.

Your PSU can have the proper "rating" and still be a total piece of... "crap". Just a heads-up.

Thanks Schutt and Krusty...

Schutt...my mobo does have an extra pwr sup for the Gcard, I'll give that a go and let u know how it goes.

Krusty...I have a brand new Antec case with a 450w Smart Power PSU, I would think that should be ok but I guess some can be faulty from new...I'll try Schutts idea with extra pwr to the GC if that doesn't work I'll  try a different PSU...

Thank you both for your suggestions

As for Antec, you're probably good. They're a top brand.

It was just a thought :)

Thanks Roger, Krusty...

I tried the extra power connecter on the mobo for the GCard that didn't help...I'm just back from a crash (at least it was on CTD).  One of the guys at the shop suggested that I try resetting everything to defaults...I'll give that a go tonight...as for the card overheating, that would make sense too but I'm living in a moderate climate and I have the cover off the case but at this stage I'll try anything.

One other thing...since the crash (post prior to this one) I cannot get AH to run, I get the "Aceshigh.exe has encountered a problem and ".  It does seem to start, the screen goes black, ready for painting but then goes back to the desktop with the above message.  Seeing this does tell me that its most likely a GC thing...

Backup your settings folder, then delete it.

Im guessing one of your crashes messed up/changed the settings.

If it works after that, copy all files back in from your backup, except the video8.cfg.

Make sure to have the sound acceleration set to 3/4. Also might want to delete the cache folder and have it regenerated.
