I need improvement, but hey, first time out with this new lens (80-200mm AF-D ED). I used aperture priority@2.8, ISO rough 400-800 (I was experimenting) used exposure comp in a couple, these were no flash, at sunset. Constructive criticism appreciated.

The first and last look real good. Nice clarity, composition and color.

Congrats on the new glass. Yes, I'm a little jealous because I still have to make do with a crappy Sigma 70-300. Could be worse though.

on what mode are you shooting?
keep working on manual settings
and deepnes of focus (not sure about english term)
and on PS skills as well

thats only 3 minutes changges

I like the first pic. The composition, color, and subject are all great. It looks pro.

The next 3 pics suffer from poor composition. The 1st two are too cluttered.....but it seems as though you were just testing the lens.

I have a heck of a time getting colors to stand out in reduced sunset lighting, I'll post pictures tomorrow to explain. What does your new lens supposed to do compared to your old one? Educate me

I'd like to see some of your pictures Byebye, they must be great. I think the pictures are far from cluttered, they are showing the diversity of fall colours. The last picture shows the necesary picture of numerous fluorescent orange, but the green one offsets them all, a nice touch in my opinion.

Lower f-stop number. New lens is f/2.8, old zoom was f/4. It allows more light in.

Here is some feedback on I got from some other photographers:

Pic 1: arms cropped . subjects direct-center in frame are rarely interesting

Pic2: Detached arm in first pic, too little of the box showing. good lines though, that pic almost works.

Pic 4: Part of the wheelbarrow (?) visible where the kid is about to drop the pumpkin. what is that? either show it to me or dont.

Pic 6: I like the natural light pumpkins only pic...

All pics: You should use a fill flash outside in direct sunlight

Hi Rip,

Note first - I take crap portraits ...

#1 I like but as the other comment said the arms being cropped is a shame. Focus is good and the short DoF works well I think. Think the comment about central psotioning is unfair - it's a protrait. Also for me the skin tones are a little too warm (the evening sun I guess).

#2 I like this one again - the sense of the autumnn harvest variety. If anything I would have tried maybe tighter framing to get rid of the wood frame / corn leaves but it's a hard shot to pull off.

#3 & 4 Great shots of your sons for the album - the short DoF takes out distraction but still gives the sense of where they are.

#5 My favourite. If anything I would have gone big DoF (f20 or so) to get all the pumpkins in focus - so hard to decide whats going to work though. The textures and colours are great.

#6 I like it .. but .. I think it's too cluttered. I wonder what it would have been like with just the three foreground orange pumpkins and the green one pulled out and placed together to simplify .... I dunno , it's one of those I never get right - you know the shot is there but ... how ???

Here's what I was talking about. First of all, I don;t anything in camera, I have a Powershot A540. I'm sure you can do some serious damage as it looks fairly advance for a non-pro camera. But, I have no clue what exposure, focus, 5.8-23.2mm 1:2.6-5.5 stuff means.
Anyway, here is a sunset in auto mode. Here is the same sunset when in maunal I decreased something that can vary between -2 and 2. I'm guessing it's the exposure? ... which I'm guessing is the amount of light you can allow?

Manual, I can see the colors of the sunset, there are no as incadescent as in real life, but I'm guessing it's the best I can do without a fancy lens.

But yesterday evening I was trying to get this shot.

When I was playing with the -2 ... 2 thingy I could capture the light blue of the lake, but then I was loosing the darkness of the sunset, thus the amazing contrast. How the heck am I supposed to do that?

A basic crash course in photography 101 is needed, so I can put a name, and maybe even a function on "Huuuu ... what does this button duuuuu?"
