I think it's the best way out right now. But the division itself might cause strife like non other. How would you split it up? How do people trade land? What if things aren't equal? What if people...

Though it might be possible that the moment the last US foot steps off the soil, all the neighboring countries will jump them and annex them.

hell........pick a side, shi*ites, sunnis...dont matter...just pick a side and help em eradicate the other bunch. Like jews and palistinians...as long as both sides exist next to each other there will be war.

I would say as long as the far right jews and radical muslims live that close their will be war.

Splitting Iraq back into 3 seperate nations would be a great solution. Only 1 small problem, most of the oil fields are in 1 section. No blood for oil? Just sit back and watch how fast they try to kill each other over it.

It would be logical to split up Iraq in 3 parts - but it will not happen.

Iraq is not an old country with tradition like 2500 year old Iran or Turkey or Syria.

It was created after WW1 - cut off from the dead body of the Osman Empire.

And so 3 different groups were put in a new country and ruled by a minority (the sunnites). First as puppets of their british colony-masters, then after the independence as a sunnite monarchy, then as a sunnite dictatorship until Saddam.

But never the 3 groups (kurds, Shi ites and sunnites) felt as a united nation.

So the civil war problems of today are a logical result.

A splitting would be senseful and 2 parts would survive economicly: the northern kurdish and the southeast shi ite part would have enough ressources.

And even if the rest of the sunni part would be given to Jordan it wont happen.

Because the NATO-partner Turkey would not accept an independent kurdistan which would only bring breat problems to their country with all their own kurds who would like to seperate from turkey and become part of the new kurdish nation.

And also because the shi ite part would join Iran (the former capital of the old iranian Empire is in the today shi ite iraq region) also all the holy sites.
And this would create the nation with the largest ressources of oil controlled by the Mullah-regime in Teheran.

So all will continue. A senseless non-official civil war in Iraq with all the dying people month by month.

Internal polls in Iraq are overwhelmingly against it, but it's getting to where what they want is a back seat thing

I thought it was the best idea from the start. After all, Iraq was created by some British guy drawing an imaginary line in the sand and calling it "Iraq." Countries formed like that are always recupies for disaster. Turkey and other nations won't let it happen though.

No, it's us westerners who think we can make the people of Iraq forget thousands of years of tribal conflicts, loyalities and property claims.

Why people seem to think that just because they think they're ritious in their actions that a culture and it's history of conflict can be changed and that change will be accepted by the populace is bewildering to me. Then those same people feign ritious indignation when these changes are rejected.

I truly don't think that there's a single sole in this administration who has the mental capacity to realize that curing these tribal differences MUST come from within and any 'help' from outsiders < christians > has very little chance of being effective, especialy in the long run.

Just have the US cut it's dependences on Oil, and watch how fast the middle east becomes less important to the the US then pull the troops out and let the whole region fight it out, then nuke what ever is left.
