Biult some (Cough) rudder peddles.
« on: October 08, 2006, 03:47:30 PM »
I'm not sure I want to post a pic as they don't look like much but what do you expect for somethin that cost me about $6, a few hours and the ripping apart of an old logicrap stick? :)

The only thing I actually bought just for this project was a couple little rigid castors from home depot (should have got 4 of them). The rest of it was some pine boards, screws, nails, a spring and some sort of pivot thing that has a couple bearing in it, (looks like it was meant for some sort of furniture) that I had laying around the place. :)

Right now they don't have any actuall peddles on them.  I just have a plank that pivots and put 1 foot on either side to twist it back and forth.  But it works and stays callibrated ok so far though I keep wanting to twist the crud out of my X-52 then remember that I need to use my feet. :D

I do find it easier to hold my rudder in one position and keep it stable with this setup than the twist on the stick.  I don't know how reliable it will be but it was fun making them and nice to know I can even if they do look a bit funny.

If I would have had more $ to spent on this I would have bought some steel and used my welder to make some better looking ones. But hey it was an experiment and if I can get some better materials and another crappy stick I may try to make another better one.

You can actually make your own ruddr pedds pretty easy with an old twisty stick and a little ingenuity.,,,,,toe brakes are a little more advanced

Ok I'm gonna put some pics up, just remember this was all junk laying around my place so try not to laugh to hard.. :)

First an over all pic of them.

I want to add some angled blocks to each end of the board that would pivot.. Would be a bit more peddle like. :)

Next is one from the underside.

I should have bought 4 of those castors to put 2 on each side. It would have made the plank more stable and durable as it wanted to rock back and forth a bit when I first tested them but they seem to be ok now after adding more screws.  I made a small depression at the center point of the castors traversal on each side of the board so I feel a little bump when I hit center.

And finally a close up of the pot connection.

I just hacked out the section of the Logitec that held the throttle pot and screwed it down. That saved on trying to come up with a mounting for the pot. :)  I would like to add some form of case around this.  I'm a bit afraid that some day I'm gonna put my foot in the wrong spot and crush the pot or something. lol

Any way I hope this comes in handy to you other guys that are interested in trying something similar. It is quite easy and they work well so far though like I said now that I have figured out the basic concept I would try to make the next set out of some better materials and make them look better with more exact cuts and such. :)

Like I said "Junk I had laying around"  I won't be surprised if the pot go's bad but for now it works ok. If I get around to making some better ones I'll go get a good one :)  I was just happy that they worked at all.. Got a couple kills in my YAK last night and 4 or 5 in an A6M using these LOL. So while they look primitive they do work.
