Windows 2000?
« on: January 30, 2000, 07:48:00 AM »
Hi guys, I would like to play, but my current setup won't allow AH to run.  (the competition does work, along with EAW)

I am required to run Windows 2000 as the software I am writing is targeted for Windows 2000 using some of the new cool com+ features.

My box:
Pentium III 550
256 MB RAM
Creative Labs Banshee 16 MB AGP
Soundblaster Live Value
MS PP Joystick
MS IntelliMouse

The problem I have is not that the software doesn't run, but that the mouse does not move.  The AH cursor is stuck at coordinates 0, 0.  However I do see the Windows mouse cursor, IF the mouse coordinates are at the screen edge.

What could you guys be doing different?  I don't believe there is any difference in the Mouse messages between Windows 9X and and Windows 2000 (never done any DirectX programming though)

I don't know, we haven't looked at Win2K and AH issues yet.  Is there any other problems besides that one?  Are you able to fly using the .fly command?

Can't get logged in at all because I can't move the mouse to press any of the buttons to get past the login screen.

Hey Pyro,

Just dropping by to let you know there are more than a couple of people interested in playing this game under Win2k.  Good luck on getting a speedy resolution.

Gazoo,

What build of 2000 are you running?

I am running 2195 (oem release) and do not have that problem, (I have no sound in game)
which is a driver related problem with the dsound3d.dll version 5.00.2134.0001 & and the Soundblaster Live drivers.

My system is :
PII 450
256 MB
SB Live (Retail)
Win 2000/98se (dual boot)
2000 is build 2195
VooDoo 3 3000 (agp)

I am using 2128.  I was using 2195 but I found a but in the character buffer that caused a failure in our software product.  It seams that in 2195 on some machines the character buffer holds on to the " character until the next message comes through.  Not a problem unless that " is the only thing you want to type.  Then the apps never receive it.

I can't figure out what would be different on my machine.  Other DirectX games work fine.  Both EAW and the competition.

Thanks for responding.

Just FYI HTC gang, I also use Win2K, although I currently dual-boot to 98 for gaming.

If you can get AH running on W2K around retail release time for W2k (couple of weeks), that would rock.  If not...  well it's OK for the short term, but very soon I will expunge Win9x from my machines forever.  Once more people try out W2K, I won't be the only one.

Hi,

I have excatly the same problem as you do. Hope this will get fixed soon. In the meantime, when I get home from work today, I'll try changing video drivers just to see if I'll be able to make it run after all.

Just loaded Win2k on the dual xeon system today.  My mousecursor moves, but only around the outside border.  If I try to bring it away from the border, it disappears.

Is there any command line type commands that can take you right to the game (log you on)?  I don't need the mouse once I am in.. only to get in.

Using the Tab and space keys should move your focus between the various buttons and then operate them.  I'm not sure if you get a visual indicator of the movement, so some trial and error might be necessary.

I'm between Win2k installs at the moment, so I can't test this but MS just put this patch out for Win2k:
 http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/deployment/appcompat/default.asp

It allows compatibility with a ton of apps, mostly games.  It's worth a shot if you are trying to get AH to run in Win2k.

OK... got the link to work.

Pyro... I tried using the TAB/Spacebar routine.  It didn't work.  I verified I was hitting tab the right number of times (TAB once.. then 3 spacebars) to get into the game.. nothing.

I got the same results with and without the patch that Lephturn suggested.
