WARNING! for myspace users

over the weekend i let my nephew use my pc to go online. We went to check his myspace page, had some invites and when he went to check them out some insidious lil friggin programm installer got on my pc. It says its a anti virus program I got rid of 99% of it however it left behind this irritating lil icon in my sys tray that keeps popping up saying i have a critical error and to click on the ballon. when i clicked on it I go to this anti virus software page.
When this first happened i was in the room, there was no install warning it just installed from myspace. My anti spyware and anti virus stuff went crazy blocking it. Total file size was only about 16kbts
Just thought id warn ya'll

It looks legit however when i goto support to send em a message, it doesnt actually do anything.

I don't use anti-virus software anymore.  Anytime I get infected, I can tell what the program is by going to ctrl-alt-del .  It'll list the program running.  Then I look it up online how to get rid of it.

hmmm after all i tried sunday...thats the one i didnt. ill give it a shot.
if it works where ya want my nephew shipped to?

ran into that problem on  friends computer a while back.  he couldnt figure it out so i took a stab at it.  

turned out it was a bogus site associated with a virus.

i tried 2 or three removal apps before it finally went bye bye.

its a nasty ugly little creature if its what i saw.

Just want till you get one of them hardcore viruses which append themselves to other EXE files

You could have one process running - "Explorer.exe" and still have a virus

Unless your nephew knows Photoshop really well, or high level statistics, don't bother.

Fist that. then two days later they managed to install the NEWDOT browser helper

Antivirus wouldnt get rid of either of them

Warning. dont remove newdot manually. Those that have have had problems accessing the internet afterwards

anyway. this got rid of both of em and a bunch of otherstuff I didnt even know was there that my AV, Adaware, and Hijack this didnt pick up.

For future prevention, consider switching to Firefox or Opera.  Much trickier to get these infections with those guys, you really have to work at it.

When you get something like that, search Google for whatever key word is dominant to find solutions.  I had to do that about a year ago for SpyAxe, one of the nastiest inflictions I've had.

By the way....Search for my name (Cav58D) and keyword "Virus"...Click on the first page that comes up called "Major spyware problem"....

That saved me....Make sure you follow all steps in the page I linked you, because my problem wasnt cured until step 10 of 10!

also try safe mode and a restore point, consider turning off active x controls, and stop using IE and switch to mozilla (although minute spyware can get through)

thanks for all the info guys i apreciate it.
I do use firefox, this is the first time i had this kind of issue.
I have already locked down my intardnet connection till i get taken care of. plus skuzzy pm'ed me some idears to try.

Using Firefox is not a pancea as it pertains to keeping bad things from your computer.  

If you do not take some time to setup the security, from its defaults, you are choosing to make it easy for bad things to get to your computer.

Nah Yeager.  I am online all the time, I do not run a firewall, nor do I use any anti-virus programs, nor any anti-spyware programs.  You just have to take some time to configure things properly and be a bit careful about what you click on.

MySpace and Youtoob are two fine examples of good ways to get burned.
