Why do "we" do this?
« on: October 17, 2006, 01:48:19 PM »
[rant on]

What's with all the "overuse" of "quotation marks?"

Why do "we" ... "use them" when there "is no" ... "quote" to quote?

Is the "only" reason to show some sort of "emphasis?"  Or might there be a "deep seeded" psychological or maybe "socialogical" reason we "wear out" the "quote key" of the "keyboard?"

It's getting "tiresome" to see all the "quotemarks"

Quote marks are for quotations.

Yet we all understand perfectly why quotation marks are used when they're not supposed to. What's the problem?
We also understand not to misuse quotation marks in an official context.

Well as far as the "quote marks" are concerned...and their "over-use", all I can say is it "high-lites" the subject being discussed, and other than "CAPS", I don't know any other way to do "it".

Back in the typewriter days, quotes could be used in much the same way italics are supposed to be (since you can't make italics on a standard typewriter).  Now that we have word processors and italics are much easier to use it's unnecessary, but it still holds over.
