My 4th grade teacher let us play tackle football...

Granted only twice, because there was only one person who tackled well, and he was the size of lineman.

I remember rock fights, BB Gun wars, shingle fights (take dads carpenter knike and make throwing stars from asphalt shingles), Cinderblock and plywood bike ramps with no helmets in the street, wrist rocket sling shot fights, bottle rocket fights, skate boarding with a ski rope behind my buddy 3 wheeler again with no helmets.

Pretty stupid stuff and I have the scars to prove it, but man did I have fun growing up.

Red Tail I know what you mean by Roman total war on the playground.

We didnt do this at school. Biut Hornet sparked a memory when he said shingles. We used to take strips of thick bark and sharpen them into knives on oldshingles. Some got really sharp. We never did anything with them but collect them.

School bans tag, other chase games

ATTLEBORO, Massachusetts (AP) -- Tag, you're out!

Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous. (Watch how second-grader Kelsey interpreted the rule -- 1:30)

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Spokane, Washington, also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, South Carolina, school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

Aye, I remember being knocked unconcious at least once as a kid (playing rugby on really hard dry ground), and knocking at least one kid unconcious. Rock fights, bike fights, tearing a hunk of flesh off my knee when a nail sticking out of a see-saw caught on my leg (man did that pull the girls... pity I was at the ewww-girls age).... oh oh and the who can forget "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" games - no doubt we'd have all been locked up as sex offenders these days.

many of us have removed our offspring from the school system and home schooled them.  home schooled kids are a far different lot from these others.  the difference is even more pronounced when compared to the publically educated ones.  I can just about tell if a child has been homeschooled, privately schooled or publically schooled in five minutes of conversation with them.

Life IS Dodgeball.  Ducking and Cringing is a foul.

How people Play is a direct reflection of ones Life.  You can't change that.

Every single life form in existance Fights and Climbs while growing, to learn the skills to Survive.  Some intellect thinks it is beneath us as a species to delve to those levels.  So be it, they shouldn't cry when nature over rules them.  Hunt or be Hunted, nature works, in Spite of what people might want to believe.

"Harsh ROC, geez dude, it's Just Dodgeball!!"

Always had em.  Just lately, the Intardnet get's the word out quicker.  Bunch of talking heads on the news are just Giddy over actions like this, as I'm sure quite a few of them got the hard end of the game and feel justified.  What they miss is that those With actual spines could care less about what they do, and play dodgeball in the backyard with our families and the neighbor kids.  Still gonna have an edge up on the more "civilized" of humanity if, God forbid, anything Nasty comes our way.

Nothing clever here.  Please, move along.

Storch, how much do your kids go to hang out with other kids?  I'm a firm believer that public school is an excellent opportunity for social interraction, HOWEVER, when stuff like that happens, it makes me wonder.  As well as reading what some of the young kids on the BBs post:eek:
