Tirpitz revisited (setup for Oct 20-27)
« on: October 20, 2006, 10:18:03 AM »
SINK THE TIRPITZ

The year is 1944. The Western Allies' bloody effort to
move supplies to the Soviet Union along the Murmansk
gauntlet is in full swing. Yet every officer in the
Admiralty, and every seaman and sailor on the ice-
coated ships, still fears the sudden appearance of
Germany's super battleship, "Tirpitz," which can
effortlessly sink an entire convoy if she chooses.
All attempts to sink her have thus far failed. Now the
carriers HMS Formidable and HMS Emperor, assisted
by long-range Mosquitos and Lancasters, will try again.

    ALLIES (BISHOPS)

    Land-based: Lancaster
    Mosquito
    Spitfire Mark 8

    Carrier-based:
    Task Group 8: F4U-1 Corsair
    SBD-5
    TBM

    Task Group 37: F6F-5
    SBD-5
    TBM

    AXIS (ROOKS)

    Bf-109G2
    Bf-109G6
    Bf-110G2
    FW-190A5
    Ju-88 at rear bases (A53-55, 57-58)

    NOTES:

The Tirpitz is represented by the fleet running between
A42 and A43. There are no planes on the carrier.

All ships are hardened to 125, the same setting as
towers and runways. You will need to drop 125 1000-lb
bombs on a ship to sink it, and it will regenerate in
    approximately one minute.

    OTHER SETTINGS:

    Radar is historical to 1944:
    Tower: 158,400
    Sector: 343,200
Planes flying under 500 feet will be under the radar's
    coverage.

    Strat is disabled
Killshooter is OFF. Do not shoot friendlies.
Friendly collisions are off (carrier operations are virtually
    impossible otherwise).
    Fuel burn rate is 1.0
    Visibility is 12 miles.
Ack settings are .25 for low-level ack, .1 for puffy ack.

Let me know if there are any problems.

just a suggestion can you enable the spits, mossies and lancs from at least 3 sectors away only/  if not spits is all we'll see for the most part.  that would be a shame in such a well balanced plane set.

Sorry, with all due respect, if there's no point in sinking the Tirpitz, what's the point of this setup?

I mean, you need 125.000 lbs of bombs to kill the menace, then it regenerates in less than 1 minute...What menace? Maybe if it left that bay where it's stuck, chased the Allied fleets, sink them and force a reset...Maybe then it would be a menace. To me, as it is, it's just a big flak wagon floating in the sea... I would not lift a finger to drop a bomb on this "would be Tirpitz", much less a Lancaster...

Sorry chaps, it's like as if you had built a "Kill Yamamoto" scenario and the Betty bomber was invulnerable...

Just asking, maybe there's someone kind enough to explain this to me and show me that it makes sense...

Thank you,

Well...seems simple enough...the point is to see if you can make it through opposition and sink something that takes more than a suicide fighter-bomber to sink it.  I think that Filth ran a mission which actually accomplished this once.

To the extent that you may be inquiring "what is the goal of this setup," why, of course, there is no more a goal here than there is in any other AvA setup.  Sinking the Tirpitz gives both sides a focus to utilize the unique plane set.

- oldman (was that helpful?) (and btw, resets in the AvA simply pork the arena until a staffer happens by to reset it)

Hi Oldman!

Thanks for reply. I still don't see the danger of a battleship - here a task group - up and down a gulf...

I mean, does she sinks my warships? Does she launches terrible amphibious assaults and takes base after base? Does she stops dead cold my convoys to uncle Stalin? Naaa, all she does is go up and down the gulf...
Would I bother to drop 125 times 1000 pounders for the joy of the fighter pilots eager for easy bomber kills? Nope, I don't need to, I don't have to and, mainly, I don't have the time to...Let it rot...

I didn't knew that about resets in AvA...I will never make one happen, I promise!

Still makes no sense to me, sorry.

Think of the title of the set up as "setting the mood" for the air to air combat more than literaly sinking the Tirpitz. The focus of the whole week shouldnt be sinking a boat over and over.

Thanks for reply, but fights in AvA must be an endagered species...approaching extinction...Sunday, logged at 22 GMT, opponents = 0; logged at 23 GMT, 1 countryman that logged instantly - not even saying goodnight. Monday, 22 GMT, opponents=0.

I'd rather be sinking ships all night...

So make the boat easier to kill or what?

As far as the numbers I really dont know what to tell you. I always found it odd that an arena that featured a some what historical match up in a WW2 sim doesnt draw more people. I know I just opened the door for a classic flamefest but, in spite of all its faults, I really would have thought more people would be in to this. On occasion we have been able to draw a crowd with a well organized mission by Filth and others.  We had a good turnout for a "Fight Night" furball thing I threw together on a whim. Hell the name change made me think we had captured the old AH1 CT magic. Not so much I guess. Anyways Im medicated a rambling. Im open for any suggestions <>

I'd love to try that again. It was a fun one. But I'm real busy with work right now so I don't have time to do it atm.

No, it's not the boat, just bring more people in!

Oh dear...How I miss those evenings in Ct and AvA when I would find just the right number of opponents and allies to fight excellent duels in good teamwork! Right on the spot, not a crowd, not a mano-a-mano...The best maps, the best setups, I dare say, the best "sticks"...

Do you see how many fly in the EWMA these days? And, for that matter, in the MWMA? Do you see how LWMA is crowded?

Sorry, I do feel endangered...aren't you all?

BTW...

It's 22:22 hours, Tuesday, wife watches soap-opera in tele, I logged into AH, AvA...zero players.

And now the other arenas have colours...who cares?!

Should we resort to draft? Like, your 2 weeks experience must be spent at AvA...Swim or sink!

Slash, what's your medication? I think I need the same...

You should've been an hour or two earlier there yesterday, we had some fun fights between 19-21 GMT (20-22 CET). Well, only 4-6 people online, but the fights were still fun. Sorry that you missed it.
