The Mets were supposed to sweep the Cards, too, and look how that turned out.
The St. Louis pitching staff has been outstanding in the post-season except for the Game 5 meltdown. Weaver I think has surprised EVERYBODY with his performance, and Suppan was nearly unhittable. Carpenter is one of the best pitchers in baseball when he's on (he wasn't bad in Game 6, but he wasn't at his best). I'm worried about Reyes, yes, but he's proved he's got some nasty stuff.
The biggest surprise by FAR was the bullpen. Wainright has settled it pretty nicely as closer (oh my god, that curve is absolutely wicked. Full 12 to 6, and 20mph speed difference with his fastball, which is mid-90s) and there's a lot of young arms showing that they can PITCH.
Maybe the offense hasn't really clicked the way it should, but I'll take our 1-8 against any team in baseball
