Icons - in the air - how to read them
« on: October 22, 2006, 11:57:11 AM »
Hi Friends

In the air I see icons next to the planes. I can not find any explanation of how to use the information and what it means.

I am flying along and see an enemy. I have found that the enemy icon shows the type of aircraft and country.

What does the plus and minus mean? And the number, is that the altitude they are at or the distance from me.

The enemy planes are just dots until suddelny the zoom by. I cant figure out how to use the info to set up for a fight.

Thanks

The icon reads, plane type (which becomes more detailed as you get closer, example: P-51 becomes P-51B or P-51D @ close range) The country icon.  The number is the distance to the other plane the + or - indicates whether you are getting closer to them or if they are moving away from you.  (- indicates range is decreasing, + range is increasing)

Soulyss nailed it, but left out one thing.  The number is the distance to the other plane in thousands of yards when it has a decimal point.  With no decimal point it is the distance in yards.  It is an absolute distance, so you'll have to SWAG* the altitude.

Adding to that: The distance indicated in the Icon is in yards. It is more detailed for friendly planes then for enemies.

for enemy icons, the distances are as follows:

distance between planes in yards ~ range shown in icon

0 - 99 ~ d0
100 - 300 ~ d200
300 - 500 ~ d400
500 - 700 ~ d600
700 - 900 ~ d800
900 - 100 ~ d1000

1000 - 1250 ~ d1.0K
1250 - 1750 ~ d1.5K
1750 - 2250 ~ d2.0K
etc

One side note: distances are in yards, while altitudes are in feet. That means a plane thats directly above you at 1000 yards (icon distance!) is actually about 3000 feet above you.

One last point......Icons will disappear if the enemy is very far off (3k/6k cant seem to remember wich one). But beacuse the icons are BELOW the aircraft, they will also disappear if the enemy is VERY CLOSE TO THE GROUND or NOE(Nap of the Earth) as its called. So just cause u dont see an icon doesnt mean hes always very far off especially if he down low.

Hazard, in Main Arenas, the icon range is maximum 6K.

In some special event range is set to "Short icon range" - which is 3K.

Another note: If you want to know what a firendly is flying, you can toggle icon mode with ALT_I. Modes re: Normal, Plane Type, Friendly only and Icons OFF. MAke sure youve toggled back to "Normal Icon Mode" after checking.

As far as the planes looking like small dots, you may want to try the Zoom features out.

Z -  Toggels Zoom on/off
[ -  Zooms IN
] -  Zooms out

I have these 3 keys mapped to my joystick, I like to zoom all the way in on an enemy plane when i am saddled up and ready to shoot,  Some people like to shoot with the zoom off, I find i am alot better shot if i am zoomed all the way in, but with that level of magnification if the enemy is close (under d400) and makes an abrupt move and gets out of your direct line of sight you can get disoriented very quickly, when that happens i just hit the Z key to turn the zoom off untill i can saddle back up on him and then i will zoom in again.

So when a plane is 200 in front of me, that's really 200 yards?

That's like 2 football fields.  That doesn't sound right to me.

But I do know that when a plane is 1k above you, that means they are 3k higher than you.

I think it's due to the way AH models altitude.
Time's fun when you're having flies.
