Mic Doesn't Work
« on: October 27, 2006, 03:35:36 PM »
Any ideas on how to fix this? I know I had my microphone working on this computer before.

I just switched back to my Alienware machine after playing for some time on my laptop. My microphone and vox worked fine on the laptop. I don't get anything on my Alienware although I can hear the rest of you fine.

I know it's plugged into the right slot. The sound control program tells me so and gives me a warning if I plug it in anywhere else. I also know the mic works because when I've tried to test it, I can hear my voice in my speakers (???). Yet, when I try the computer sound recorder, it shows no modulation at all.

I went to the control panel and checked out the sound applications and tried testing it there. Still, it tells me it's not detecting sound.

What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Oh, in case anyone's wondering, I believe I have the mic output volume up enough on the sound control panel.

If you show the speaker icon in the task bar, click on it. If not, go to control panel and double click on "Sounds and Audio Devices" and check "Place volume icon in the task bar.

Double click on the icon and it should be in "Play Control". Locate the microphone and click "Mute".  Click "Advanced" below the microphone and  check Microphone +20dB Boost.

In the volume control panel click "Options" and select "Properties". Under "Adjust Volume for" click "Recording". Make sure Microphone is checked and click OK. Under "Microphone" make sure "Select" is checked.

Looks like my system is a little different as I can't do it exactly as you suggest. Pretty much did the same thing and still no luck. I must be missing something simple. Thanks for the help, though.

Vista provides the option to boost the mike, too - up to +30dB, BTW; forgot where I found that, though.

bring up windows sound recorder, and bring up your control panel.

in control panel bring up sounds and audio devices. on the audio tab under the sound recording option there should be a drop down list. if there are multiple options try each until you can record yourself in windows sound recorder.

it should then work in game.
I don't know what to put here yet.

Open the "System Control" (Vista view, not classic view) and click on "Hardware and Sound", then select "Manage Audio Devices" (or something like that, I'm using the German version) under "Sound".

Now you (should) see a list of your speakers and/or headphones on the "Playback" tab, and your microphone on the next tab "Recording". Double-click on the mike symbol and select the "output" (or so) tab (the 2nd one, the tab in the middle).

Now you can set the output volume or level and the mike boost, up to +30dB.
