okay, well i downloaded a trial of windows blinds by stardock.  it provides themes to allow to to skin and customize your desktop.

my trial is about to expire.  

before i buy.

i am wondering if there are freeware programs out there that anyone knows about for changing icons on desktop and general UI for windows.

hate the xp look, would like to personalize.

It was years ago, but from what I remember, windowblinds is pretty hungry.
I don't use it myself, so I can't tell you for sure just now, but I think Windows XP has some rudimentary theme support of its own.

There are a lot of apps, from fairly simple, to complete shell replacements that'll take you a dozen hours to totally sort out as you like them.. most of that stuff is pretty thick with scripting (e.g. Litestep or Samurize), but I don't think you'll have use for that (I stopped there).

Customize.org, deviantart.org, and a few others should serve as pretty good ressource/info hubs for you to start from.
I have a big archive of those type of things, but the drive isn't hooked up at the moment, sorry.

Deviantart.com has a few different programs, and even more importantly, there's a big library of really neat UI profiles, some really spectacular.

I always set my puters on max performance in the settings. Makes XP look like somthing from the 90s and extremly dull but i get less tired of that than the usual teletubbies standard theme. It makes the pc alot more responsive too.

JB88 I've been using WindowBlinds for years and recommend it for those who want to change the look of windows GUI.

Check out their Icon Packager too...very cool.
