Urgent help requested (HT,I asked about this yesterday)
« on: April 28, 2000, 07:04:00 PM »
Hi there.

I have a friend that downloaded AH 2 days ago and who cant connect properly. He has used it offline and likes the sim very much...but he is having serious problems and I dont know why.

the connection with HTC is good, he pings www.hitechcreations.com  and he gets good results...but as soon as he comes into an arena, or EVEN H2H!! (?), he gets disconnected in 30-60 seconds.

I asked HT yesterday about it and he told me that maybe the joystick or the modem were giving problems, so I asked to my friend about his configuration...

Stick;ThrustMaster. FLCS 16 - TQS - Rudder pedals

Modem:US Robotics 56K FAX EXT

So...any hints on what is all this about?...It MUST be the program, I fly Falcon 4.0 with him and his connection is good indeed!...thanks for the help, everyone.

Ram,have him download the program from the link below, you might also have him check if his ISP has any other dial-up #`s he can try,I bounce around on 3 different dial-up numbers to find the best one for gaming.

Achieve LAN performance with your dial-up modems! Smartalec Smartplay optimizes your computer and internet settings to provide the best online gaming experience a modem user can achieve. Through special optimizations and tweaks, Smartplay can lower latency and improve internet online gaming experience by up to 40% to allow the user to achieve higher scores and lower pings. Small and compact and easy to use. The optimization process is only a 1-click affair. Smartalec Smartplay supports all standard modems as well as specific support for Rockwell and USR/3com chipsets as well as cable modems.

I don't really have any good ideas other than asking whether he has tries the alternate route to the MA?  (Just pick the one marked "closed".)  There is probably some packet loss going on between his computer and HTC.  Like everything else on the internet, connections vary daily.

We've tried the program you say, weazel...no change at all

Bloom25, the problem is that he cant connect properly to the MA, but he cant do it too in TA, even to the H2H!!!! (in H2H you are supposed to connect other people, not HTC host).

That is why I say it MUST be something wrong with AH itself, it seems to dont work well with my friend's computer as he cant connect for nothing longer than 30 seconds...

PLEASE, NEED HELP IN THIS MATTER!!! Thanks again for help

I remember reading something once about external modems on this BB.  (I think ts mentioned a problem concerning them once.)  I'll see if I can find out what it was.

Ok, it wasn't ts, it was CRASH who had this problem.  http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/Forum10/HTML/000005.html
Here's the thread where he describes his problem.  (Note: This was WAAAYYY back in .36 or so.)

If you notice, he had the EXACT same modem as your friend.  Seems that the modem won't connect at a speed that AH can use.  I'll keep looking to see if I can find a solution to your problem.

Ok, I went to the US Robotics (now 3Com) web site, but without knowing exactly what model of modem your friend has I can't track down whether or not this is a known issue.  Here is a link to their drivers page though.  I did notice a universal driver file that was updated not too long ago.  You might try a new modem driver.  http://consumer.3com.com/modem/inf/index.html

The problem seems to be that USR External 56k modems can't use the speed of connection that AH needs to work properly.  (Notice Crash fixed his problem by using an old 28.8 modem he had.)  I would try new drivers and see if that helps.

Let me know the model number of his modem and I'll see if I can do better.

Hmm, I'm using USR 56k external Fax Modem Pro USB, works fine. I did have problem with using USB, it screwed up my joystick somehow! Hooked it up using the parallel port, works fine. Ram, have your friend try turning down the modem connect speed to 19,500. Also try all the other possible speeds if that one doesn't work. That and lowering the port settings to their lowest along with unchecking 'compress data' under the advanced tab curred my connections when Savis.net was choking AH. I had sorta the same problem during that 'week or two', where I could get in, but that was it, couldn't fly, until I 'tweaked' my modem settings. Good luck!

See if he has a Winmodem.  Winmodems do not do well with AH.  Also try checking/unchecking poll with interupts in the joystick setup.

A winmodem is a cheaper kind of modem that offloads much of its work to the CPU.

The "poll without interrupts" is a checkbox in the joystick setup.  There could be a conflict occuring between your joystick and modem that this setting could change.
