sure, in some cases this works just fine and in others it is not so easy.
if i had a TrakIR i could just lean forward and to the side a little bit, but lo i am confined to a hatswitch and i am not as fast at finding the darn arrow buttons on the keyboard as i would like to be.
it's more a matter of convenience.
for instance...lets say that i am flying in a formation and the leader says, turn to heading x...and i am like...dernitall...where is that compass and then..oh, i have to hit this button, then that one and then i have to zoom a bit because it is hard to read...meanwhile i have lost visual and have fallen out of formation and the rest of the formation would be laughing at me for being an idiot but they dont have trakIR either and we have all just smacked into a mountain and the war was lost because we could'nt manipulate our gauges.
ok.. a bit dramatic.
how about this.
if i can hit a button and see that i have lost my left gun (which was attached to my missing wing...which i can see quite easilly...or that my engine is out
et al...) then i don't think that it is too much of a modernist upgrade to be able to see the gauge stats all nice and neat in front of me. in fact it would be wayyyy cool to have it on the screen in the same way as the damage report shows up.
airspeed, heading, altitude, gear up down, etc.
doesnt mean that i wouldnt use the graphics...most times i would...but it would be a great help to be able to pull these things up when i cant see and i dont want to futz with a big work around.
i would reeeeaaaally like to see this one.
(big proponent of revamping the clipboard and stats systems for ease of use here)
