Having trouble inflicting damage ????
« on: September 04, 2001, 09:22:00 PM »
Today 1st day of new tour i was in a foul mood, cussing and spitting blood. Why you may ask ? well I think 1 lucky kill in 8 sorties says it all really. I was being outflown by everything i met and it was really beginning to rub me the wrong way.
I even logged out in a temper, but logged back in about 1 minute later  :) During this minute it suddenly dawned on me what the problem could be.
Earlier in the day i had upped the overclock of my 1 Gig AMD Tbird to 1400 mhz. Of course i ran some 3Dmark 2001 results  to compare the performance before and after, well as anybody who benchmarks knows you turn of the V-synch option in graphics drivers to increase performance, as an example 3Dmark 2001 score jumped from 3500 to approx 4250 with that 1 alteration.
Unfortunately i forgot to switch the V-synch contol back on afterwards.
This one thing totally hosed my gaming with AH for about 3.5 hours, its hard to believe how much difference it really made.
Even if i had a shot they were missing or doing no appreciable damage and I was being outmanouvered by planes and people who at least in my mind in the circumstances should have had no chance at all  :)
So do yourselves a favour check and make sure that D3D V-synch is turned on.

Ive tried both settings, noted no difference.

I would like to know this also. I only notice a screen flicker when my FPS go higher than my refresh. Anyway I get a lot of hit all the time that do nothing, I just associated it with my dial up connect, and stupid earthlink dropping dammage packets on the way to HT server. I mean I know some of it is loss dammage packets, because I see 8 AP hits on a tank and I ask him, he says he only heard 3. But I bet this may also be part of it. I will try to check it and see if I see a difference.

Disabling V-synch has been reported to cause "rubber bullets" for some time.  I've been dealing with this one since I signed on as Trainer.  Never disable V-synch... there is no good reason to.  The FPS number the counter shows will go higher, but you won't actually see all those frames.  "V-synch means that the drawing of frames is synchronized with the refresh of your monitor, so that sometimes a frame will wait to draw when the vertical refresh of the monitor occurs, so that each frame is displayed.  The option to disable V-synch was put in place as a benchmarking tool, since with V-synch enabled your highest frame rate will be the same as your monitor refresh rate.  It is pretty much useless for regular game play, and can potentially cause problems with hit detection and/or smoothness.

In short, to avoid problems, ensure that V-synch is always enabled.  Although I can't tell you exactly why, I can tell you that there have been many folks with "rubber bullets" who solved those problems by enabling V-synch.  In most video drivers, you can toggle this option somewhere in the advanced settings.  You may need to find a tweaking tool for some cards/drivers to see the option.  V-synch should be on by default (which is what you want), but some versions of nVidia's Detonators had V-synch disabled by default if I remember right.

By default v-sync is on.  I believe for drivers to earn WHQL certification, they have v-sync on by default, and no control contained withint the control utility for direct 3d.

Typically a tweaker is used to turn off v-sync
