singing at the pub
« on: November 06, 2006, 05:58:00 PM »
sitting here listening to some "Flogging Molly", and it got me thinking about something i've always been a wee disappointed about.

im in my early 30s, and have been to many drinking establishments in the U.S.  From Irish pubs in NYC to little hole in the wall joints in the midwest.

anyway... i've always wondered about why we don't sing chants in the pubs here like they do in the "old country". it has always seemed like a good time to me. a few pints and some song.

just one of the many useless ponderances that go thru my head in a day.

in order to sing along, you need a good beer, not that watery frozen lager you drink there in the states

one thing the americans can never beat the brits at, a cosy old countryside pub :) seriously though, i reckon it's because there aren't so many 'old' american traditions and shanties. here in england there is no rite of passage more sacred than the first legal pint or two (or six :D)

then again, you could get suitably pissed and start singing, hoping that atleast one other drunk will join in

About ten years ago we had a power outage that lasted most of the night.  Some friends and I went to the local bar because there was nothing else to do.  Under the light of a coleman lantern, we sat and drank pizzwarm beer and sang all our favorite old songs (Beatles, Skynard, etc).  It was easily one of the best nights out ever.

yeah, ive always wondered why we don't do it here. i'm sure alot of it has to do with the fact that we don't know any songs like in the old country. i mean, yeah, i've been places where some folks got to singing a song or two but it has only happened a few times in my life, and the songs, though good, aren't the type i'm talking about. i can't even give a good example because i don't know any of them. just picture some movie that has a bunch of drunken english or irish or scottish types in it, and one fellow starts a singing and then everyone joins in.

you all know the type i'm talking about right? anyone out there know any by heart they would be willing to share? i swear i'll learn it and belt it out the next time i've had a few pints and the atmosphere is right.

Flogging Molly

well i stumbled in at 2 am all drunk and full of smoke
my wife said "I have had enough, thats it i'm sick, get out"
so i stumbled down to kellys pub across the edge of town
and told the boys me story, and we had another round

now we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight
yes we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight
and if i might see a pretty girl i'll sleep with her tonight
yes we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight!

and mary mcgregor
well she was a pretty potato
she'd always greet you with a smile
and never lock her door
but on the day she died
all the men in town did weep
for mary mcgregor, finally got some sleep

now we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight
yes we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight
and of o might see a pretty girl i'll sleep with her tonight
yes we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight!

well i onced loved a girl
a child i'm told
i gave her me heart
and she gave me a cold
so now i sit standing here
out in the pouring rain
i'll stumble back to kellys pub
and cry away me pain

now we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight
yes we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight
and if i might see a pretty girl i'll sleep with her tonight
yes we drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and drink
and fight!

The Soldier's Song

We'll sing a song, a soldier's song,
With cheering rousing chorus,
As round our blazing fires we throng,
The starry heavens o'er us;
Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the morning's light,
Here in the silence of the night,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus:

Soldiers are we
whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free,
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

In valley green, on towering crag,
Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race,
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus

Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
The long watched day is breaking;
The serried ranks of Inisfail
Shall set the Tyrant quaking.
Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silv'ry glow,
Out yonder waits the Saxon foe,
So chant a soldier's song.

Chorus

I have herd and sang this one in the Irish Pub in Bamberg Germany.:aok
