GeForce

The ATI didn't have any reviews and i didn't want to get disappointed.

From my understanding, that ATI card isn't for gaming. It's for work station use, where many points and 2D things are rendered (lines and so forth). It's not going to perform anywhere near as well as a comparable "X" series card.

That is, if I have the right card in mind (and I think I do).

You are correct Krusty.  The FireGL cards are specifically designed for OpenGL acceleration workstation systems.  They are lousy for DirectX games.

I think the latest ATI card, that they pulled out to compete with the 7950, is the "X1900". I think. I'm not up-to-date on recent releases.

So i can't get a card that is great for both gaming and editing? I want to play AH, Neverwinter nights and also run shake and maya. I need an all around card no more then $550.

I have been looking but i dunno what to look for.

thanks dud

I have a Geforce 7600 GT - great deal for the roundabout 200 USD, at least for gaming. I have no idea how it does for editing.

If you really want to throw extra money away, sure. Practically speaking, you'll essentially get the same results with a $300 card, as well.

Mind you, nobody argues that it's the best card there is right now. It's just that it's overkill for most people (and by most I mean all people :rofl ). Do I want one? Hell yes!

But if I had $500 I'd spend $300 or so on a Ge7800/7900 and pocket the other $200.

So, long story short: Yes, that card. If you want it.

The 8800 reviews I've read seem to show a huge speedup and more importantly, image quality improvement over the 7xxx nvidia and 19xx ati cards.  No kidding 30% faster, with better image quality across the board.

Here's a great review and comparo to ATI's best:  http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTIxOCwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

Problems of course include the $500+ price tag and the super long card won't fit into a lot of cases.  It also needs lots of power.  Still, if you want the fastest, you're gonna pay for it.

Two 8800s in SLI... Don't even want to think about it right now since I just bought my last ever AGP vid card upgrade (7800GS on sale for $200).  That's my FS X upgrade and it ought to last me another year or so.  Next upgrade will probably involve a total system refresh since I've just about maxed out what I have.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
