Buff formation modeling.....
« on: November 19, 2006, 06:15:56 PM »
I posted a "complaint" about the way that buff formations move at times. I happened to catch this behavior on film here. I simply do not understand why the buffs need to warp around like this. These buffs are never out of my front view. I'm shooting at the drone and it warps at least a couple of times...but only a few hundred yards....when I switch to the lead the warping/lagging drone is blasting away literally from right beside me (or so it seemed).

*** at edit***

Actually I was in on lead 1st and as I opened up the drone literally warped to right of my wing so when tail opened up on lead the drone was "broadsiding me from

As far as I'm concerned there should be a limiter (similiar to the "stick stirrer" function) that limits buff movements to those the formation can follow.

I'm literally shooting at a buff and watching it pop up 200 yds away still in my front view.....

At worse, the drone jumped 3 plane lengths from where it was due to the manuvers the lead plane and pilot were pulling and a poor connection or lag from one pilot or the other.  Also, what are your video settings at?, since many pilots are experiencing stuttering and video problems since the latest revision at higher resolutions.

What I saw was mild compared to some warping that occurs from fighters in the arenas.

Hitting the drones is probably a good tactic if you catch a buff driver unawares.  When the buffs are manuvering, it's probably better to take out the lead plane.... when it goes down, the buff driver will have to bail to another ride, there will be a slight delay, and often some warping.... gets worse the longer it takes the pilot to get into a new plane as the wreckage from the first falls.

For a MMOG... what you saw and experienced is a slight annoyance, but a simple limitation of connection speeds, lag,  and throughput over the net.  It is quite possible that the problems with the drone position was at your end of the connection, since the lead buff was pretty consistent in it's position.  I don't know enough about HT's code to know for sure how they prioritize the drones.

You want rock steady targets to shoot at, stick with a combat simulation against AI's with no online component.  You play online, you we get warping, discos, and whole menu of problems that go along with it.

Buff drones do have some limitations in movement, which is why buff drivers loose them when they draw too far away from them.  Violent manuvers with buffs do tend to result in drones warping or stuttering sometimes.  Could they be tweeked to limit it? Probably.... the buff catch up speeds is the easiest I can think of...... but compared to the folks with poor connections, or who "wiggle" their connections every time they get into trouble.... this problem is minor.

there was no manuevering here that justified the buff drone warping like that. This wasnt a connection issue or a VC issue. I make passes very close with no stutter, warp or other glitch. It's pretty obvious that the buff driver is generating this "warp" thru intentional movement that in effect denies a guns solution on the drone and places you in a precarious position of you target the lead plane.

I'm not in a position to address issues regarding fighter "warping". However those are connection, lag or "other" cause related. The buff formation warping is controlled by code within the program. I hope at some point the powers that be will at least look at the underlying code and consider altering it to minimize this type of tactic.  90% of the buffs do NOT exibit this behavior....it is in fact a bug explotation IMO. Eventually as with all bugs 90% of the buffs will be doing this.
