My system config is as follows:

Windows 98SE
DirectX7a
Athlon 700
Abit KA7
128Mb PC133
LeadTek GeForce256 DDR (latest drivers)
SoundBlaster Live! Platinum (latest drivers)
Diamond Fireport SCSI3 (Windows 98SE drivers)
Thrustmaster ACM Gamecard (Windows 98SE drivers)
Intel Pro100+ Network card (Windows 98SE drivers)
18Gb SCSI3 Hard Drive
4Gb SCSI3 Hard Drive
Pioneer 6xDVD 32xCD SCSI2 DVD-ROM
Plextor 40x SCSI3 CD-ROM
Thrustmaster F-22Pro with StickWorks Digital F22 chip
Thrustmaster TQS with StickWorks Digital TQS chip

My previous problem of joystick spiking and static filled audio are gone.
My new problem is that AH hardlocks the computer after 5 to 10 minutes of play.  This does not seem to happen in either EverQuest or Aliens vs. Predator, the only other two games I've tested extensively on my new system.  They both use Direct3D as well.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

A strong possibility is a cooling problem.  To confirm, I'd try checking your fans and maybe trying to play with the case left off once.

Karnak: you have alot of devices using power.  If its not a specific device heat problem it might be that the whole unit heats up and electrical conductance falls off and it quits.  If you have a monitoring window in your boards bios -start the machine, get into the monitoring utility and watch the voltage read out for dips/spikes.  Good Luck.

The GeForce card by itself will draw a minimum of 18W.  (The thing EATS power.)  As such cooling and a huge (300W) powersupply will be absolutely necessary.  Maybe try running with the case off for a while and see if that helps.  If it does, add more cooling to your system.

I just got looking at your system specs, very nice btw, and you have an aweful lot of things in there.  How big is your powersupply?  It better be at least 300W.

Another question is are you overclocking your Athlon at all?

I have a similar setup, and I was running my Athlon 700 overclocked to 800.

For some reason AH didn't like this in the least and I would get dumps to desktop and the occaisonal freeze.

Set it back to 700 and not a single problem. Of course it wasn't like I needed the additional speed for AH so it wasn't a big deal.

Good Luck

From a fresh reboot and a cool system, how long does it take to lock, if it locks at all?
If it locks, note how long it took to lock, then try resetting and let the computer sit for 30 minutes, then try running game again and note any time difference.

Does it lock after running other D3D software?

Thanks all.  I'll try you're suggestions.

Yes, the power supply is 300w.

I was overclocking it to 750 (mine wouldn't post at 800), but I have since set it back to 700.  I was also overclocking the GeForce to 150 on the Proccessor and 325 on the memory, I have since set that back to 120 and 301.
