Hello all.
I'm thinking of picking up this...hobby, - making models of either aircraft or ships.
It's ben a long time since I last touched this, and on top, my wife might be in on this as well, so I ask you, always-wise forum for advise, - where to start?
I am thinking plastic-aircraft in not the smallest scale, as well as possibly sail ships.
So, is it all Revell still today, or is there some nice stuff to begin with?
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Tamiya and Hasegawa are a couple of the top model companys these days, I think you will find they have surpassed Revell in quality.

Go to some modelling shows/conventions.  Most decent sized cities ought to have a modelling convention sooner or later.  Browse around, see what everyone else is doing.  If you see a guy with a judge badge, pick a model you like and ask him for his opinion.  If the judge is nice and your question is open-ended enough,  you might get a good bit of education right there.   The judges will often be able to tell you not only the background behind the model, but also where the builder deviated from the kit, what materials and techniques they used, etc.

Of course you'll probably get a lot of very opinionated answers since lots of really serious modellers seem to think everyone else is doing it wrong, but if you don't let that bug you then you can learn a lot in just a few hours.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

I'm thinking of taking it back up also, but there isn't a hobby shop near me.  Can someone suggest a reputable website to browse and purchase models?

Dont start right off on the model you want to build and look good. Practice painting and other techniques on maybe a model of a car or something not worth while.

I'd recommend starting on a 1/24 or 1/48 scale model just so you don't get too frustrated right off the bat.  Not knowing either of your modeling abilities though, it'd be hard to say.

Oops sorry about the link.  Guess I should check those beforehand.

If I was going to get back into modeling I would buy these 1/18 scale “toys” and add detail, damage, change the paint scheme, etc.

Huge planes with decent detail for $50 to $70.

When I was a kid I had about 70 model airplanes hanging from my ceiling.  Many of them were scenarios.  I had a 1/32 F4U hozing a 1/32 Zero; bullet holes everywhere, three feet of painted-stretched cotton balls for fire and smoke, parts coming off and partially imbedded in the smoke.  I had a flight of 4 Mosquitoes escorted by 1 or 2 Typhoons getting shot up by a 109.  Etc.  I loved adding damage but it was tough to do on a small scale.  These 1/18 would be perfect for that.  You can’t find any kits of that scale for that price.  Heck, you can pay that much for 1/32 or 1/48 scale now a day.

Hey Eskimo they have those at Wal~Mart.  They have a 190 D/P47 combo for $25 that I've been looking at for a couple of months.  Very nice detail for a very resonable price...
