AH and Widescreen support
« on: November 24, 2006, 11:17:10 AM »
Skuzzy,

Are there any plans to enable better support for widescreen formats (other than chopping off the top and bottom of the screen) in AH2?  I've got a 21" WS collecting dust, it's a distinct disadvantage to try and use it with the current method of widescreen support.

Thanks.

I know you can edit the video8.cfg file using a text editor and set the screen size to anything you want. Weather it stretches the picture or not I can't tell ya.

No it doesn't stretch the picture.  However it chops off the top and bottom instead of adding to left and right sides. Essentially a widescreen zoom.

Aces High II is already at a 90 degree field of view.  In order to expand to use the 16:9 aspect ratio we would have to increase the field of view.

Bad thing about that is it causes a 'fish-bowl' effect on on the display.  Other games default to using a 70 to 75 degree field of view for the 4:3 aspect ratio and then expand to 90 degree on a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Bottomline, there is no visual method available to us to get there from here, without creating a really ugly, and darn near unreadable display.

Thanks Skuzzy.

Any tips on trying to make a WS usable without having unviewable parts of the sky?  Or is that just the way it goes?
