LCD displays- what to look for with regards to specs
« on: November 25, 2006, 03:11:28 PM »
Hoping to upgrade to an LCD display
(17" CRT getting a little hard on the eyes), and I'm noticing the wide variety of response times and native resolutions. What are the important things to look for? I use this PC for internet access and gaming only, mostly AH. Is response time a major factor? Is there a performance hit when running at a higher resolution than the native one? Any particular brands/models/features to avoid?

Yes 8ms is fine though... Well i belive your refresh rate will drop = lower fps.

All the lcd's i've had are fine! NEC, View sonic, samsung so on so on all great even most of the noname brands are decent :lol  Cant go wrong with lcd really just look for low resp time!

Forget 8ms, most are now 5ms which is much better, and there's a few 4ms out there.

Performance hit depends -

If your CPU limited, probably not, the extra "size" will be done by the GPU.

Just fitted a 22" LCD to mine yesterday, very happy with it.
At the moment all the 22" widescreen monitors use the same LCD screens, so you can base your choice on what else comes with it.

Yup, response time is first criteria and lower is better. 8ms and less are good, and even 2ms are available now in Japan. I don't know when they'll be available in the US. After that, I would suggest you simply look at them and decide which looks best to your eye for color and brightness.

Remember that Viewsonics are made by Panasonic and Sony and generally built to lower standards than the comparable model built under their own brand name. Mitsubishi Daimondcrysta models are well made.

Most have native 1280 x 1024 resolution and AH looks pretty darn good at that resolution with hires textures. Good luck!

I got a samsung 930BF which is listed at 8ms but is bad in AH2. Problem is the blue/red transition times are a LOT slower giving a green shadow to the red enemy icon when it moves fast (looking around).

I suspect the problem is only barely so probably the 931 is good (which is listed with 2 ms). But mine is not :(.

That was kind of what I was worried about. Seeing a lot of specials on 19" widescreens lately (missed one for 130 at best buy :(  ), but don't want a good deal that won't handle AH well. Thanks for the feedback guys.

I had a samsung 930 with 8ms time but the smearing was bad enough at close range and fast movement ie close a2a that i went back to the 19" crt. I just switch to the dell 24" widescreen 2407WFP with 6ms and though I still see the blurring, it is not as bad as  the samsung and is tolerable.

Dont get too hung on response time. Some monitors lose out other ways going for fst response. Sub 12 you won't notice any difference. I have NEC Multisync 2070NX with a 16 ms response and it's much nicer than my Viewsonic vx922 with its 2ms response time, especially in Battlefield 2.

Matter of taste of course quite often.

17 or 19 inch monitors are good enough.  I won't stop you if you want a monitor as big as your TV on your living room:D

Things to look for...

Contrast ratio  Most LCD monitors have contrast ratio of 500:1 the higher the better.

Response time 6ms are good. 4 is even better.

I recommend you these monitors

* 2ms response time
* 2000:1 contrast ratio

* 5ms reponse time
* 2000:1 contrast ratio.
