I think I bought my Renault Alliance for about $7000 in 82 or 83 when I was stationed at Lackland.   The first year I had it I think I had to take it in for warrenty work about 3 times.  In Dec 84 PCSd to Mountain Home ID,  one of the CV joints went out in northern California on the trip there, cost $1500 plus extra hotel time and towing charges.  The next year made a trip to Oregon to see the in-laws, muffler fell off as we were going down the road.  6 months later the altenator died.  Then the AC compressor died.  Got divorced in 87 and got to keep the car.    Sold it to my youngest sister for $600 in 87, a few months later while she was driving it one of the front wheels fell off :lol

My cars from 1998 onwards:

1972 Opel Kadett B
1985 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28
1981 VW Jetta
1980 Ford Fiesta
1986 Honda Civic
1983 Peugeot 305
1989 Renault 19
1991 Ford Escort Express(diesel)

I thought there were more... The youngest was 13 years old when I got it, and for the most expensive one beside the Camaro I paid $1000. The one I liked the most was the Peugeot because of it's soft ride and seats. 6 of those I've scrapped myself.

I have a 69 el camino with a 468 big block and 6 speed...  I have spent too much money on it but still not more than most spend on a new mid range car.

moot:  that's what i'm sayin!  lol

-

p.s.- when the muffler went out, i used to pull up next to muscle cars and rev the engine while i pulled the emergency brake and rocked back and forth on the clutch and the accelerator.   it would make the front end pop up like it had air shocks. in reverse, the rear would pop up.

the hood ornament was an bright red iguana.

yep.  good times.
