Fuel load-out for F4U-1A
« on: December 01, 2006, 06:13:11 PM »
Does anyone else wish the load-out for the -1a was like the load-out for the -1?

Maybe we could politely request that HTC adjusts this for us.  I know I would appreciate it.  I don't care to have so much fuel loaded into the wing tanks.

BTW, HTC, thank you very, very much for the new graphics on the old hogs, and also for the new -1A.  Hogs are about all I fly and I've been eagerly anticipating the update, and they are better than I could possibly hope for!

Actually I find that the fuel distribution on the 1A is MORE useful than as it is for the -1 based on a conversation and recommendations by some of the AKs (I think it was Dogg, but that was the day of the patch so it's been a while).

If I'm going at least a sector I take 75% fuel. Burn the left wing down to 25%, then burn right wing down to the same. Switch over to main tanks until empty and use the "reserve" this creates in the wings as go-home gas. 25% in the left and right tanks will get you 40 miles on cruise settings, sometimes more if you have enough alt to reduce even further (woo! so next time a magic bullet punctures my main tank from Dead 6 without hitting the pilot I won't run out of gas while I RTB).

With this procedure I reach my normal cruise alt on wing tanks only, and more or less arrive over target with the fuel down to 25% in both wings (depending on the distance I may have a little extra in the right tank, or have burned a little off the main).

Also, is it just me or does the 1A seem to not suffer so badly from a heavy fuel load? 1D always felt REAL sluggish with 75% in the main tank but even though the 1A carries a bit more she still feels lighter.

Standard practice in the Fleet was to use the wing tanks like drop tanks. Only use them when fling beyond the limits of the main tank.

The Squadrons worked endlessly to get these tanks to function without leakage and internal breaking from the wing structure. They tried several different tanks with varying degrees of success. Ultimately the tanks were removed but not without protest from the operational squadrons that prefferred the maintainance problems to the performance loss suffered from the use of drop tanks.

I use the wingtanks as a reserve for RTB'ing as well, but would still prefer that they loaded out with less than a 1/1 ratio when compared to the main tank.  Something like 3/4 in the main and 1/4 in the wings would be better.  Even then I will generally use up what is in the wings just to be rid of it.
It seems to me the plane should roll quicker w/o the added weight out in the wings.
Personally, I guess I'd love the option to have 100% in the main, and 0% in the wings, but thought I'd be willing to settle for the same load-out as we use in the -1 since HTC had already set it up...
I guess I use the wing tanks as they are now mostly because they are set up that way, not because I think they are best used that way.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind having the OPTION to choose fuel distribution. Let guys who like the current loading fly that way, the guys that don't can do their thing, and everybody's happy.

when selecting 75% fuel in -1 hog it does but 100% in main and 25% in wings but the overal fuel load is same as -1a all except distribution.  -1a puts 75% in main and 75% in wings.  I would actually rather the same fuel loading as the -1.  That way I don't forget to switch back to auto select, lol.  BTW, this last patch seemed to hinder the hogs some.  They seem to be flying heavier then they did before the last patch.
