Countries have the right to purchase arms. If they didnt but Russian, they would have bought somebody elses.

The Germans have a squadron of MiG-29s, doesnt make them communists.

I dont know why the manufacture of their weapons is causing such an uproar.

Would Chavez be less of a dick if he purchased F-16s? more? the same?

Its their policies, it makes no diff what brand their rifles are. The bullets come out of the end really fast irregardless.

I think it's more about the Russians supplying the evil Venezuelans with war machines rather then about the right to purchase arms, Squire.  Just my take on the situation though.

Venezuela used to own F-16 and we did not have problems with it.

For some odd reason USA stopped sending F-16 parts and other US-related machines to Venezuela.  This forced Venezuela to buy MiGs and Sukhois

It aint the machine, its the man.  80 year old Chuck Yeager in a piper cub could whip the whole venizwhalen air farce in commie mig whimpy fighters any day of the week.

If it's the man, not the machine, then how can the Migs be commie or whimpy?

And I'm thinking that Chuck Yeager will wind up on the receiving end of a highly-manouverable radar-guided missile, fired from 30 miles beyond visual range.

What do you complain about? This will mean lucrative sales to you, for example to Colombia.

The Russians arent "supplying" anybody, they are SELLING arms for $$$.

What is the fundamental difference, does anybody who is sober think freaking Venezuala is some great regional superpower because they bought some arms made in Russia?

Its a bunch of hype. Every country on the planet has fighters and tanks and rifles, ect ect, save only the poorest ones, and sometimes even they do.

If Venez bought SSBNS or something, ok, that would be cause for concern.

This is all about Chavez being an anti-Amercican lout who happens to have bought some shiny new arms. Well, thats just the world on any given day folks. He wont be around forever either, so dont let it worry you.

Hey, it looks like Castro isnt going to be with us for long (lets hope), and the regional balance will shift again once he is gone. Tomorrows another day.

...As for the Su-27s themselves, another poor choice by a 3rd world country. He would been better off buying many more counter insurgency and light attack a/c than a top end air superiority fighter like the Sukhoi. They look nifty at airshows, in a real shooting war with the US Navy, they would last about 5 minutes, and everybody knows it.

The Su-30MK2's they are buying is an excellent multi-role aircraft - with a variety of guided, and dumb muntions. It is the aircraft of choice for second tier countries with plenty of cash - and if properly supported should provide good regional superiority.
But with off the shelf avionics and ECM suites, it would be hard pressed to make an impact against the western powers.

we are the biggest arms dealer on the planet.

the more weapons of any kind sold the better for our arms trade and... for our research and development.

When people lose the desire for world domination we can quit.
