Although family and police determined it a clear case of suicide, conspiracy theorists inevitably appeared, postulating that Thompson may have been murdered because of information he had concerning the September 11, 2001 attacks.

What do you think of that?

I think it's funny that this kind of thing makes its way into just about anything.

I mean, we know Hunter wasn't exactly a fan of Repubs and if he DID have info you'd think he'd be the first one to hold up his hand and wave it frantically.

but would he make the grim connection that the vast lonely stretch of mountains that he called his home were similar to the ones that were once home to the manson family?

i don't think he was a fan of politicians period.

granted, he was especially harsh on those with conservative views, but i think it was the totalitarianism that tends to follow such logic (the opposite being total bedlam, which he seemed to be more comfortable observing)

he called nixon a war criminal.

but then, he called lots of people lots of things.

Metaphorically, we can all make that connection.  Although not all homes are mountains and not all mountains are homes.

Yes, a war criminal..and yet he said he'd vote that war criminal in any day over the Bush-Cheney regime.

Sounds kind of delusional, or stuck on his hating his generation's most reviled "villian".

i think he got cartooned in the end.  mostly by his own choices.

its that way with lots of the greats i think.  he stopped really getting out into new territory and got a bit stale.  kingdom of fear was a bit of a rehash and really doesnt hold water.

he never really reinvented himself.

another example is vonnegut.  i've always loved his books.  they are simple, smart and funny.  light reads with deep meanings.

seems like suddenly the light starts fading and then the thumping starts.

ive never been a fan of indictments against status quo without some sort of solvency to back it up.

reinventing is the key.  hunter could not.  he was too invented already.

still, i love his work...even his worse was better than most.

its his style that i appreciate most.  his choice of words in their apex.

Madonna is the queen of re-invention, does that make her more valid?

no.  but probably more interesting to a greater number of generations.

it is really on a personal level that it interests me most.

when i am functioning as a creative, i put alot of pressure on myself to reinvent...not because i need to be valid, but because reinvention is the challenge...always another angle.  some are more universally true.

but really.  its the work.

my real feeling on the matter?

i think he blew his brains out because he was bored and he didnt see any more angles.

or maybe his wife had him killed.

who knows...

I think artists, by far, are the hardest on themselves.  I think it's harder to stay with what you know best, what made you.  I think re-invention is the pressure coming from others that think you have to change.  I don't buy that at all.

But I can understand the wife deal...sometimes they make men do stupid things.
