Sound Card Help

i need some advice/help picking out a new sound card.
I have the 5 speaker and sub-wolfer arrangement.
not sure about the difference a 7.1 card would make over a 5.1 with my current speakers
My onboard sound was doing well however, its now not working on all speakers and the mic port has failed plus i have been reading that a seperate cound card in "most" instances is better.
sooo I was wondering if anyone had any advice or ideas on a good card in neighborhood of $100.

What mobo do you have? On many mobos, the onboard sound is way better than a sound card.

I have a asus A8N SLI deluxe
however im having some issues with the onboard sound hence the reason for wanting a new card
