Windows 2000 Pro versus XP Pro
« on: December 04, 2006, 04:09:19 AM »
Which is best for gaming?

Any real difference between Windows 2000 and XP Pro after you disable all the overhead? Does XP Pro offer better performance in terms of a bare bones, low overhead, but high power gaming system?

...assuming both have all the updates.

I've not been able to find any good answers in searching the net.

Thanks

I haven't found any difference between them except Windows2000 takes longer to bootup. Of course XP has loads of needless eye candy.

Lately W2k has been dropping out of many companies driver support lists though. I think it should accept xp drivers just as well.

One thing to remember... 2000 was never designed with gaming interests in mind.  Now I'm not saying you can't treak it, but don't expect 100% compatibility with a lot of games.  2000 was designed as a "business" operating system and was so successful they decided to base XP off of 2000 instead of 98 (Remember what a nightmare ME was?)

Actually now that I think of it, I liked ME... I think the biggest problems it had was people loading 98 drivers into it, as ME driver supports wasn't exactly great... but I think that's for a different discussion.

I remember once forcing 95 modem drivers onto a 2000 system... and was actually shocked that it worked.. flawlessly at that.. without a bluescreen.

There there's my father in law... he bought one of the cellphones with a camera.. then bought a USB bluetooth adapter so he could download his pictures wirelessly... never could get it to work.  I went over there and realized he had no USB drivers installed... I installed the appropriate drivers for him (98SE), still nogo.  After screwing with it four hours... finally took a potshot and installed win95v2 drivers on it.. and it worked flawlessly... strange happenings sometimes, I swear!

The whole time he was swearing up and down that it wouldn't work, because the box for the bluetooth said "2000/XP" on it and I told him to get it anyway because the salesloser at best buy was pushing one that was $100....

Ok I've strayed off topic here... good luck to you!
