Just had a wacky idea...

What if AMD and Intel used the same socket type? That is, if they somehow mysteriously came up with a new socket type so all motherboards would use the same socket and you could swap out as you wish.

Wouldn't that start the biggest CPU war of the century? Competition would go through the roof!

Imagine having customers that could (at will) swap out your chip for your competitors! The drive to make a chip that nobody would WANT to swap would be immense!

I was just reading another thread and thinking "I've got nothing against AMD at the moment, I'm just on a Socket775". Then I had this wacky thought.

I think that will happen right after Microsoft and Linux gets together and create an inexpensive, open sourced OS that is stable, user friendly, unbloated, and works with everybodys existing hardware and software, and only requires 5mg install and 256mg ram to run

But 5mg of what to get the install done?  :D

And if it is irritating enough you need 250mg os something to run the silly thing, I ain't sure I want to sign up for that!  :rofl

AMD did that with the old "Slot-1" Vs "Socket 1" mobos from years back, I believe Intel had a hissy fit. I think socket 7 and super socket 7s were like that too.

Ya, up until the Super Socket-7 AMD had always used Intel sockets for its chips (then the K-6II and K-6III).  Intel switched to the Slot 1 design hoping to leave AMD with an outdated platform and sucking up Intel's dust.  AMD cranked up the FSB speeds to hold on until they developed their own MOBO design (Slot A and then Socket A).

So your "wacky" idea wasnt so wacky.  Its just already been done.  :)

Cyrix were a total POS and deserved to be drug out into the street and SHOT. I had the distinct misfortune to own some of them. A "333 MHz" cyrix cpu clocked at 200Mhz. Total POS... *shudder*
