Hang onto that vision
Actually, there is a very good chance he will be in a squad/section/team leader position. Anyone with any kind of background to rate a bump in grade (ROTC, IADT, College, Boy Scout record,...it varies...) often ends up working those positions for the DI's. Really it means more responsibility on top of training, and when your people get dropped..... you drop with them. They've done something to indicate their experience to-date (and hopefully not just fast-talking a couple buddies to join with them), which justifies a little more effort in their training cycle by their DI's.
These positions change hands through the cycle, more often than not. I was squad leader for about 1/3rd a cycle, and platoon sergeant for 1 week. (Funny that, now I'm a platoon sergeant again after 19 years.......)
Those that prove to be above average to outstanding usually will get a notation to that effect in their records. Good trainers are always on the lookout for potential leaders to fast track into NCO Schools, future Warrants, Mustangs, and enlisted personnel that should be steered toward OCS.
