Just curious about the FW A5
« on: December 06, 2006, 12:15:06 PM »
Hello all. Do the wings of the earliest Focke Wulf fall off in a dive? I did a vertical vulch the other day and scraped the ground on the pull out. Was handleing funny and looked out and both wing tips were gone. Was this caused by the dive or by hitting the ground? I managed to fly it home and land it which was an adventure in itself. Just wondering. By the way, you get a lot of perks for stomping a typhoon in an A5 :D

For $14.95 a month you don't get wingtips. Please upgrade to the AH Gold Plan (add'l $6.95/mo) to get wingtips and bullets with actual rounds in them.  For an extra $11/mo you may have bombs that actually explode.

Seriously, you probably ripped them off on the pullout. The only thing I've ever damaged without dying when hitting the ground or a GV is the tailwheel.  I've done that about 5 times.

I don't think it's very realistic though. The 190 had a solid main wing spar, and another long partial wing spar. It was a VERY strong wing. I don't think it would have ripped off with any amount of Gs. The pilot would have blacked out before it would have happened.

I ripped a pair off of an A-8 the other day. I had been in a powerdive, was starting to shudder from compression, chopped the throttle, pulled back hard on the stick, and bang.

Yup, that pretty much describes it every time. Hell you can do it with a power OFF dive from 10k to drop a bomb on a target, pull up at 3K and rip wings off. It's not realistic.

It's your concentration camp prisoner labor force down at the Focke Wulf factory that's making sure those planes are shoddy.

Well, thats what I think too. It's a heavy plane with small wings and I always thought that the wing causes much of this weight because it was made very rigid. The rigidness is one of its assets when it comes to creating a phenomenal roll rate. If you look the rivet lines in the wing you realize how much metal there actually is.

Just another coffin nail.

So you can pull more instantaneous G in 190 than any other plane, e.g. F4U?
