Starting aces high?
« on: December 06, 2006, 09:24:03 PM »
When i try to start aces high from my desktop i double click the icon, then it looks like aces high is going to start but at the last minute a error comes up saying this program has encountered a problem and must close. Why is it doing this and how do i get into aces high? I used to play for about a year but stopped after my computer crashed, now im just trying to play again. Whats wrong?

Sounds like some hardware/driver conflict.

Wed need to have your system specs to be able to tell you more. Can you post the top third (we dont need the whole shebang, only the "devices" part) of a dxdiag output here?

Quote
Here are the steps to do this:

1) Go to "Start" from the Windows desktop
2) Select "Run" from the pop up menu
3) In the Run dialog box, type DXDIAG and press
4) After a few seconds the DXDIAG utility will be ready (the progress indicator in the lower left corner will disappear).
5) Run the video and sound diagnostics (Select the Display and Sound tabs to do this).
6) Press the "Save All Information" button
7) This will save the DXDIAG data to a file of your choice

Your vid card driver looks a little old. Try updating that one, you can get the latest Catalyst Drivers here:
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

If that doesnt help, try deleting the video8.cfg file in your game settings folder (by default thats C:\Programs\HTC\Aces High II\Settings) and when the game does starts, on first screen go to VIDEO SETTINGS, set resolution to 1024x768 and texture size to 256. Do not preload skins. If both "optimization terrain/objects" are not greyed out, check those. (Note: If they *are* geyed out, do not check them in the game GRAPHIC SETTINGS either - that is possible but will crash the game).

And set the Hardware accelleration in the dxdiag sound tab to 3/4 "Standard", not Full.

Do not use the latest Catalyst drivers.  They will cause other problems with your video card.  Try using the Ctalyst 4.12 drivers.  The ones you are using came from a Microsoft update.

I do not believe it is a video card driver issue, but it could be.  If you do not get the opening screen, with the clipboard, something else is usually wrong.

I should clarify,  That only applies to the original 9000 series, and earlier ATI cards.  Some of the renumbered (ATI8500 = X300, for example) cards might need the older drivers as well.

RPRS, you say that you used to get the login screen. Was there anything you *changed* before it stopped working? Like something on your computer or some game settings? Maybe updated drivers?

All those folders you list can be empty when you havent started the game yet, or havent saved a mission etc etc....

Try deleting the whole settings folder - the game should recreate one on startup. If that doesnt help, we need a dxdiag output to be able to troubleshoot further.
